1 million pounds of beef recalled on e-coli fears
Cargill says meat processed Oct. 8-11 may be contaminated with bacteria
WASHINGTON - The giant agribusiness company Cargill Inc. said Saturday
it is recalling more than 1 million pounds of ground beef that may be
contaminated with E. coli bacteria.
The ground beef was produced between Oct. 8 and Oct. 11 at Cargill Meat
Solutions plant in Wyalusing, Pa. and distributed to retailers
across the country.

They include Giant, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Wegmans and Weis.
Cargill learned the meat may be contaminated after the Agriculture
Department found a problem with a sample of the beef produced on Oct. 8,
the company said. The bacteria is E. coli 0157:H7.

€œNo illnesses have been associated with this product,€
said John Keating, president of Cargill Regional Beef, said in a
statement. €œWe are working closely with the USDA to remove this
product from the marketplace.€
E. coli is harbored in the intestines of cattle. Improper butchering and
processing can cause the E. coli to get onto meat. Thorough cooking, to
at least 160 degrees internal temperature, can destroy the bacteria.

organization of Cargills beef, pork and turkey businesses.
The Wyalusing plant produces 200 million pounds of ground beef annually.

If anything, the longer a recall for tainted food is delayed, the more
litigation is bound to result. Its anybody's guess if the cost to recall
this meat sooner would outweigh the cost of the litigation, which is
bound to occur.

The FOX TV News talking heads mentioned that Topps (the frozen burger co.)
went out of business as a result.

Yup, for any food processing business to survive, it has to take steps
to reduce the likelihood of its spreading food-born illness as much as
possible.

Gotta love the name "Cargill Meat Solutions". It doesn't take much
imagination to figure out why the contamination happened.

From <MSNBC
1 million pounds of beef recalled on e-coli fears
Cargill says meat processed Oct. 8-11 may be contaminated with bacteria
WASHINGTON - The giant agribusiness company Cargill Inc. said Saturday
it is recalling more than 1 million pounds of ground beef that may be
contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

This should help the sale of meat grinders. I just don't buy the store
stuff considering the risks.

supermarket. i think your fears are misplaced.

Even back when we ate beef years and years ago, never bought prepacked
minced/ground beef. Even with the hand-operated grinder, it's just a
matter of minutes to grind 'real' meat. With the grinder attachment for
the stand mixer, little time at all.

That's true. There must be fattier cuts around though; can't remember.

Nowadays we grind pork, turkey and chicken. Lamb is too expensive to
grind up!

As opposed to our ground pork which usually costs around USD1.20 a pound
or so.
