But I feel much comfortable now having one. Here are some of the other daily uses for us: DH goes out on the back-40 -- there are a lot of things that can happen during that time. DH goes to do errands -- reminders to get this or that. We stay in touch constantly. If I'm walking around the trail by myself -- what if I fall -- or encounter a bear? What if I get lost? Where in hell do they let you drink in the supermarket? I don't have anything against drinking and I do drink from time to time but I can't see any need to drink while shopping unless you're an alcoholic. Now, maybe if you are shopping at the state store and they have free samples, like they do at many grocery stores, well, then it makes sense. Of course that's *never* going to happen. ;-) Of course wine tasting at a winery or tasting room is sort of like tasting while shopping. Anyway, there are enough problems with other shoppers in the supermarket - blocking aisles, etc. - without having them tipsy as well. Good grief! The CM in Houston? I don't live there anymore, and it's been at least four years since I visited that store. Back then they didn't have a wine bar (that I remember, anyway--but it's quite a large place, so there may have been one and I just didn't see it), and I never saw customers drinking while shopping. That may have changed in the last four years. Mary |

The liquor stores here (Baltimore area, not state-owned) give out wine samples every now and then (usually on the weekends, when a representative from a particular winery is present). I can't imagine the state stores in PA giving out samples. Mary |

It happens once in a while in some of the LCBO stores here in Ontario. They cannot give it away, so they have you pay a quarter to a charity. Local wineries used to give free samples but it became too much of a local pastime to go out wine tasting and people were going from winery to winery sampling but not buying. There is a limit on how many samples they can give you. The wineries where I shop don't usually charge me for the samples if I buy a case. I went in to a winery last month with my wife and two friends from Holland. We had 3-4 samples each, including an ice wine and it was all free when I bought the case..... and it was a bottle of cheap Chardonnay that was on sale... old stock.... quite drinkable. It has been a nice every day wine for us. |

Well, I don't find beer, wine, or any other alcoholic drink to be refreshing in that sense. I'd want ice water or unsweetened iced tea or possible some lemonade, but usually when I'm hot and thirsty I just want ice water. I drink alcoholic beverages for the effects of the alcohol, not for the taste or just to wet my whistle. But, I guess that makes me weird. Well, at least you got Coke and Pepsi in the right order. ;-) I like Coke (hate Pepsi) but only like it with food, not to drink by itself. If I'm going to drink alcohol I still want it to taste good and thus will drink the most pleasing - to me - beer, wine, or booze. But even though I've learned to like the taste of various alchoholic beverages it's in the context of drinking them to get high. If I had to drink something that tasted exactly the same but contained no alcohol, well, I wouldn't. As just plain beverages the taste of all forms of alcohol actually taste pretty nasty. The reason they taste nasty in most instances is the taste of the alcohol itself, although I think in the case of beer, especially, if you just remove the alcohol taste the remaining taste would be pretty disgusting. And that's probably also true with plain liquor or most wines. Now with many mixed drinks they would probably taste even better with the taste of alcohol removed. I just finished installing guards on my eaves troughs. In theory, I won't ever have to clean them again, and that is a good thing. It is a dirty, dangerous job that I have had to two at least three times a year because I have to huge maple trees in my front yard, plus a few smaller trees in my yard, and a row of maple trees across the road and upwind. Last year I fell off the roof and hurt my leg. I started the job yesterday and did the second story and around the family room, but it started to rain so I had another 70 feet of it to do today. All the gutters had to be cleaned out before I could put the covers on. I was grateful to my wife yesterday for her help in putting the tools away, but not so thrilled with her today because she had gone out while I was out picking up more of the rough guard. Damned if I could figure out where she put my cordless drill. I had to drive more than 50 screws through aluminium guards and troughs by hand. I deserve a drink. BTW.... one of the handiest tools I have found is a leave blower. They are a real labour saver. They are great for cleaning up leaves rather than raking, and most of them come with mulching attachments. They are also good for cleaning up decks, patios and driveways. You can even use them for cleaning eaves troughs. |

Stop&Shop has carts with drink holders on the handles, but they sort of imply that they're for coffee, not beer bottles<g>. > Now, maybe if you are shopping at the state store and > they have free samples, like they do at many grocery stores, > well, then it makes sense. That's right, your from PA where the state keeps close tabs on the booze. Many states allow alcohol sales in grocery stores, and others have "package" stores that are (usually) small private businesses. > Anyway, there are enough problems with other shoppers in the > supermarket - blocking aisles, etc. - without having them tipsy > as well. I guess I'm just as suspect, because when I have a day of shopping and I don't get enough water while I'm in the car, I'll take it into Costco because I'm usually there for at least an hour or two wandering the aisles. Maybe a nip in it might ....?? Nawwhh! Dee Dee |

I try my best to remember to take water when I leave the house to shop, or appointments, but even though I have a list at the door, I don't always catch everything. As I get a little puny, I also try to take a few snacks so as not to have to eat in a restaurant. Not all restaurants are healthy, either; you can't even count on their water being that good. ![]() "ChattyCathy" > wrote > http://www.recfoodcooking.com/ I voted that it's a bad idea for stores to offer drinks for while people are shopping. It's not the alcohol, I don't care about that. It's any beverage. I can just imagine the people clogging the aisles while sipping, then sloshing whatever it is all over the place when carts bang into each other. It just doesn't work for me. Have your drink or your coffee or whatever when you're done shopping. Or before. nancy |

Eating while shopping wasn't good enough, huh? Sure. I see. Supermarkets here don't sell wine, so that eliminates drinking it while shopping as a problem. They do sell beer, but local laws prohibit drinking it in public places (we don't have bars, we have "clubs" that require membership and are not considered open to the public). Would you go into your favorite liquor store and start sipping at a bottle as you browse the displays? I hope not. |

Still, I do believe shoppers are more likely to graze than guzzle during a grocery shopping trip. > -sw (who doesn't need to troll) I'm happy for you. Who's trolling? |
