I have never been sick enough that I couldn't get up to eat, or else I was
too sick to eat.

When I have a choice I do not eat in bed but I have been in

Interesting that I voted with the majority this time on all counts.

To be perfectly honest, I eat most of my meals in front of the computer
at home, or at work with a good book or magazine.

Never in bed, not even to snack.

I don't generally eat when I am sick.

It takes encouragement and it's not in bed.

Same here. Luckily I don't get sick that often, but when I do, the last
thing on my mind is food.

I'm too damn mean to get sick, the bugs keep their distance.........

No, in all seriousness, it's a psychological thing for me. During the year
and a half that SWMBO was undergoing Chemotherapy and Radiation, I served
countless meals to her in bedside only to see the meal come back up later.
Can't eat a real meal in bed without reflection kicking in a bit. A little
popcorn or chocolate during a movie maybe but not a whole meal. Old habits
die hard though as she continues to get at least a fresh cup of joe
delivered bedside each morning before I start my day.

I always bring my wife a cup of freshly brewed coffee in bed. The
word, "coffee," is her cue to wake up.

I have only been in hospital 3 times - twice for the birth of my kids
and once for an appendix operation... so I wasn't "very sick", and the
nursing staff had no objection to my sitting in one of the visitors'
chairs to eat my meals on a tray, next to the bed. But I suppose if you
can't get out of bed to eat, or if the hospital "rules" don't allow it,
you don't have much choice.

I am always brought a large cup of fresh coffee and double cream in the
morning

I have eaten in bed (but mostly not) too many time in hospital to want to do
it voluntarily

I don't count that. I have to be *really* sick to not get up to eat.
At that point, it is not a *choice* to eat in bed or not.

I voted "rarely", because I will eat in bed if I'm sick or when
someone serves me in breakfast in bed. I eat more often in front of
the computer though.

If I can't get out of bed and get to the table, I am most likely to ill
to eat anything, anywhere.

The only time I remember eating in bed was in the hospital, after my hip
replacement operation. I should say "trying to eat", because the food
was so vile, I didn't eat anything that was cooked there and waited
until Marcel would bring something from Zabar's. I would eat sitting in
a chair and have two hungry men as guests, one a patient, the other his
SO, who could not eat the hospital food, either. The SO would bring
outside food, too, but the stuff Marcel brought was better. )

If I'm really sick, then I'm not hungry. Plus, it would be my luck that
I'd drop the food on the outside of me, rather than the inside.

I never eat (or snack) in bed. If I'm that sick I don't eat. If I need to
eat I drag myself to the kitchen and heat up some chicken stock or broth and
sip it from a mug while sitting on the couch.

I have to get up to clean the litter box and feed my cat whether I'm feeling
well or not. My cat has a fountain with lots of water, she's okay. I have
to get up for my ovebird, although she really only needs fresh water because
her food cup holds enough for a week. But she needs fresh water daily.

I never eat in bed. Even when I was in the hospital for pancreatitus they fed
me sodium chloride IV for a week. They let me sip water (after a stupid
negotiation with my "the patient is never right" asshole doctor) through a
straw to gargle, just to keep my gums and tongue from turning to cracked mud
brick. The BUMS!!!

Fired my Doc for that bullshit! "I am no longer in need of your services!"

I did answer never to the meals in bed, but didn't think of hospital
stays. So I guess it's a rarely then.

I don't consider being bedridden and eating in bed the same as a
question, Do you eat in bed, as if it's a usual voluntary thing you
might do.

When bedridden I don't enjoy the food, maybe because when I'm sick enough
to be bedridden, I act like a little kid all whines, moans, whimpers and
mucus. And I don't really have a appetite. Also since I live alone and if
sick meals are sparse and quick affairs, when ill, as I have no energy to
spare. All my energy is tied-up in the whineing, moaning and whimpering.

When eating food in bed, say cause it's a 'let's be lazy day' or a
readathon I do enjoy whatever I eat. Usually outa a box marked snacks.

I cannot eat when I'm sick. If I'm sick enough to be in bed, I just
want to be left the h*ll alone, in a dark room, with the comforter
pulled up under my neck. The DH will look in on me from time to time
and bring me some ginger ale. I just want to be left alone. I can't
recall wanting to eat while sick, if I'm sick enough to be in bed.
OTOH, my mother used to call me the Family Stoic. If I was sick enough
to admit it, I was running a temp of 103°F and passed out on the floor

I force myself to walk to the couch, and eat there. I've never been so sick
that I *couldn't* get out of bed. Even after gall bladder surgery, I was
able to fix myself meals in the kitchen and eat them in the living room.

Yeah, totally different. It's not like if you're in the hospital you get a
choice, would you like to eat here or in the dining room?

Eating in bed when you are ill, I suppose either at home or in the

Eating in hospital seems to have provoked more disussion than I
expected. I just mentioned it to explain a possibly slanted
response to a question that is ultimately not all that
important. However, I don't like crumbs in the bed-sheets either

I have to agree... I took the question to mean do you eat in bed out
of choice, not out of necessity. I'd venture to say that everyone has
eaten in bed at some point... there's that nursing thingie again, and
those pesky childhood illnesses. And even hospitals, if your ill
enough to be admitted as an in-patient you're gonna take your meals in
bed, at least initially... anyone claims they didn't is lying.

I was in the hospital for 5 days in November last year. I ate a total of 2
meals - both were bowls of tomato soup and I didn't eat in the hospital bed.
I sat in the chair. They want you to immediately get up and move these
days! The chair was a good thing considering they never changed my sheets
or my gown. <shudder>

The questions were all in the present tense. I can remember having
breakfast in bed as a kid. It was supposed to be some sort of treat, or
some sort of power trip. I remember toast crumbs getting into the bed and
being very uncomfortable to sleep in later that night. So, yes, I have
eaten a meal in bed.... more than 40 years ago.... so No, I do not eat in
bed.

Ditto for me on this one. If I'm gonna eat, I'll drag myself out to
the dining room or living room.

When my mom had heart surgery (repair of an aortal defect, day of the
big quake of the 80's, 10/17/89), she was sitting up in a chair eating
clear broth when I visited her the next day. No bed meals for her!
Talk about one tough broad.... :-)

I confess I've never spent time in a hospital, but that's gonna change
next month when I have surgery. I'll have to forego Zabar's (I'm
amazed Marcel could get through the lines in time enough to feed
you!), but I will certainly have my legions covertly bring me decent
food :-) I'm also gonna pull a Christine and stock the freezer with
my good homemade foodies. When I broke my foot a coupla three years
ago, I survived on nuked frozen burritos and nuked veggies. And
canned soup. That ain't gonna happen again if I can help it.

Tammy, I hope it is nothing serious. Whatever the surgery will be, I
wish you good luck and a speedy recovery. MS

Absolutely not... it's a survey about what people have done, not about
what they are doing right now or will do in the future. The only
thing present tense is when that survey was taken... not to what
particular period the survey pertains... in fact since no time frame
was given that survey includes all the time from the moment of ones
birth to the present. And since the survey was mute as to the future
there is nothing stopping someone who said they don't eat in bed to
begin doing so from this point forward.

That survey per se was in the present tense (the date of the survey),
but not to what the survey pertained.

The only time I was in the hospital was for intestinal surgery. By the
time they took out the NG tube (worst part) and unhooked the IVs, I'd
been abulatory for a few days. Likewise, the couple of meals I had were
in the chair.

They sure do. I'm certain that's a good idea, but at the time it's
like, "Are you crazy? I can barely move, let alone get out of bed!"

I can relate! Jeez! I forced them to let me be for a day and then they
insisted on having me up. It sucks, though! Ugh. I'm still trying to walk
upright 6 months later!

Well, I voted "always" for all questions.
Since when I'm at home I always eat in bed
except for the very rare occasions that I have
company. So the answer is closer to always than
to "fairly often".

As mentioned in the past, I live alone and I
like to eat watching tv for company and since
the tv is in the bedroom I always eat in bed.

If I have dinner guests, of course, I join them
at the dining room table rather than take my food
upstairs on a tray to eat in bed while watching
tv and leaving them to their own devices downstairs
or inviting them to join me in bed. It just wouldn't
be very comfortable with more than one person, me,
and perhaps 1 or 2 cats in the bed.

If I have houseguests I also eat with them at the
kitchen or dining room table for the same reasons.
Of course, if they wanted to eat in their room then
I would probably revert to my solitary habit of eating
in bed. However houseguests are unlikely to want to eat
in their room as the only tv is in my room so they would
become quite bored. I guess they could read a book while
eating in their room but it's harder to eat reading a
book as one has to hold the book in one hand and then
one is left with only one hand with which to eat which
makes eating somewhat difficult in many cases, say, eating
fried chicken, f'rinstance, as it takes 2 hands to eat
fried chicken. And then you get the book all greasy which
is okay if it's their book, but if it's my book or a library
book, well, it's just plain rude to get it all greasy.

Anyway, the only other times I don't eat in bed watching
tv are when I eat out at a restaurant, which unfortunately
is not as often as I'd like due to financial constraints.
Although, I think it would be nice to have restaurants with
beds and tvs so that one could go out to eat at a restaurant
and still be able to eat in bed while watching tv.

Unfortunately I have almost never been too sick to
eat. No matter how sick I am I still want food!
