I find it very enjoyable and try never to miss an episode. Season 3 is
going to be starting soon. What do you think of the show? What do you think of Chef Ramsey? As an aside, in season 1, the winner was promised thier own restaurant. When the guy with the tattoos won, Ramsey called him before him and said "What I'd really like is to take you to England with me and let me continue to train you". He accepted, but I wonder if he still got his own restaurant? |

And to those who consider him an "asshole," at least give him credit for being an immensely successful one. Unless, of course, you don't think Michelin stars count. http://www.decanter.com/news/107298.html Ramsay brings Michelin star total to 10 January 25, 2007 Sophie Montagne Gordon Ramsay has upped his already high profile with two more Michelin stars to his name - bringing his total to 10. The outspoken chef-turned-TV star has lapped up the honours in the new 2007 Michelin Restaurant Guide. Ramsay's Petrus restaurant in Knightsbridge, London received a coveted second star, Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea retained its coveted three star rating, and La Noisette, also in Knightsbridge, took its first 'macaroon', as the French call the sought-after rosettes. With 10 stars Ramsay is by far the most-starred UK chef. He is beaten worldwide only by Alain Ducasse, who has a total of 14 stars spread around an empire which covers London, Paris, Beirut, Las Vegas, Tokyo and all points between. Ramsay's flagship in Royal Hospital Road in Chelsea is one of only three restaurants to hold three-star status in the UK. The other two are Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck in Bray, and its near-neighbour the Waterside Inn, run by Michel Roux. Elsewhere, critics' favourite Arbutus, winner of Decanter's Best Newcomer 2006 Award (see February issue for review), and Tatler's Best Newcomer gong last week, was one of 13 new restaurants to be awarded their first star. Other stars went to all corners of the British Isles. Christophe in Guernsey received its second star, and Atlantic in Jersey got one star, to take its place in the Guide alongside its one-starred neighbour the Bohemia bar and restaurant. In Wales the Crown at Whitebrook was awarded a star, helping to raise the profile of the Welsh culinary scene. The Crown joins Plas Bodegroes in Pwllheli, North Wales, as the only Michelin starred restaurants in Wales. Ynyshir Hall in Aberystwyth has lost its place in the guide. The hotel was praised for its 'local produce given an inventive, modish edge.' Guide editor Derek Bulmer said he would like to see Wales capitalise on the Crown's success. 'London has plenty; Edinburgh and Dublin have got stars too, so I suppose we are looking at Cardiff as the only capital in Britain and Ireland without one.' The Michelin Guide 2007 goes on sale tomorrow. -- una cerveza mas por favor ... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~ Wax-up and drop-in of Surfing's Golden Years: <http://www.surfwriter.net> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~ |

Just think how much more successful the jerk could be if he withheld his FO-attitude and replaced his demeanor with one more pleasant and friendly! There's no need to be rude and confrontational to express dissatisfaction. Sky, who won't watch the show |

I don't know for sure but it sounds to me like he figured he'd just ride on his "success" at being the winner of the show. I don't think they were offering cash in lieu of his own restaurant or taking Ramsay up on his offer of further training at one of his UK restaurants. Jill |

He could have moved to the UK to train with Ramsay as a top-notch chef and then *moved* the girl. But of course she was probably totally self-absorbed and didn't care. Now his career, as it were, is in the toilet. You can't ride out life on the fact that you won some dubious honor 6 years ago. Jill |

For personal reasons, the winner of the first season couldn't take the apprenticeship. They ended up settling for a cash payment and restaurant equipment, as I recall. The second season they had the place already picked out, I believe they are doing the same thing. If you like the show, you may want to check out his other show Kitchen Nightmares, where he'll basically go and try to help a fledgling restaurant with a "makeover". That's a great show I stumbled upon on the Food Network in Canada. Not sure when else it's shown. But I really enjoyed it. As it's British programming you get the full brunt of his asshole-ness. But what I've found is he is truly helping those people out. Yea, sometimes his suggestions fail but I think it's more due to the level of commitment for the restaurant owner. |

On HK whenever they show him away from the kitchen he seems much more personable. I think a lot of the a**holishness is in front of the camera. I'm sure he is an a** a lot of times and does yell at people but I think it is very much exaggerated for HK. On the F Word he has turkeys that are all named after other chefs. They raise them and then slaughter them for Christmas I think. Then they raise pigs. Ramsay seemed to get more attached to the animals than his kids. -- Caryn Caryn Nadelberg - Mommy to Sam and Queen of the May www.carynen.blogspot.com |

I'm not saying you have to be a total a** but being a wimp gets you nowhere. OT: when I was 21 I wanted to get away from being a waitress. I had all the requisite skills for office work at the time - typing, 10-key by touch, etc. I kept being turned down because I had "no experience". I finally got fed up. I replied to an ad in the paper that said "Experienced only need apply" and the job was for a receptionist answering phones and scheduling appointments, not even requiring typing! I wrote a cover letter that said something like, "When you get tired of looking for someone with all that experience, give me a call." Heh. They didn't hire me as a receptionist; they hired me to be the secretary to the director of administration. They admired my approach. I stayed with that company for 8 years, through a corporate takeover and then some, and moved up several positions before moving on to another job. Moral of the story: Being a wimp won't necessarily get you very far ![]() Jill |

I like this one part when he was trying to train a restaurant manager to be tougher. He was total pushover. So you'd see Ramsay yelling at the guy and trying to get him to react, but he'd just stand there cowering in fear. It was absolutely perfect. Then he'd start pushing him around. The guy just would not stand up for himself! |

The first season the family raised turkeys for Christmas dinner, also named after various TV chefs (Ramsay didn't have good luck guessing the sex of the young birds though). He's not only rude to the employees, when patrons of the restaurant come up to complain about the long wait, he insults them, too. |

When it comes to his own restaurant I doubt very seriously he's yelling at a woman who is complaining about service to get her boobs off his line! First of all, if you've ever worked in a restaurant you know no patron would be allowed to get that close to the "line" which is where they set out the plated dishes. Secondly, the chef isn't just standing there looking at the plates or the boobs. Trust me, when the chef at my last restaurant wanted to yell at someone he wasn't yelling at the woman with the boobs who was complaining about the food because she wouldn't have gotten that close to the kitchen line. He'd have been yelling at some guy in the back for screwing it up. Yes, chefs do yell. Yes, they are temperamental. Having said that, there was a chef who opened his own restaurant here and he was the epitome of polite. He'd come out and greet the customers, even sit with them and offer free glasses of wine. He made fantastic Italian food. His wife was the hostess on many nights and she was charming (if rather plastic). Unfortunately, despite wonderful and original food, the restaurant caved within 2 years. Perhaps he should have been rude instead? Or maybe he shouldn't have gone up against his wife's family, the Grisantis, who practically own every Italian restaurant in the area and wanted to keep him as a chef. At any rate, after a couple of years his business went under. He's probably back in "the family" again... unless he divorced Danette. Then who knows where he is. Heh. Jill |

One of the problems with this thread is that the negative comments are coming from people who have never worked in a big, successful restaurant and wouldn't have a clue what it's like in the kitchen on a busy, demanding night. Like the old saying goes: "If you can't stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen." I think Ramsay is bloody brilliant.

I think Ramsay is bloody brilliant. I (and his Michelin stars) happen to agree with you. No one ever got ahead in the restaurant business by being wishy-washy. Restaurants are hard work from top to bottom, front of the house, back of the house. To become a top chef, Gordon Ramsay or not, you don't get there being a wimp. BTW, he's actually a very nice person. He doesn't run around cussing at his wife and children. Here's a nice video with him making breakfast in his kitchen at home (I'd love that kitchen!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1SM73Qi1BQ What a lovely breakfast! Jill |

When you choose to eat on the set of a reality show about amateurs trying to run a restaurant, you're not there for the food or the service. You're there to get your face and other assets on the telly. Ramsay insulting the "patrons" is all part of the production. Whether or not you approve of reality shows, you can't judge a man's character by the part he plays in one. K |
