Default Silly question - and *yes* it is food-related...

Do you find that you stick to your "old faithful" recipes/dishes on
certain days during the week?
e.g. this kind of chicken on Mondays, that kind of beef on Tuesdays...
and so on...

What about weekends? (I usually try to "experiment" then, I have more
time)...

Just curious.

Well, we do have some standard family favorites, but they don't appear
on specific days of the week - like the Simpson's porkchops on Thursdays
:-)

We do always have something that holds well on Tuesdays - be it a
casserole or soup or stew type thing because we end up eating at
different times on that night so dinner needs to be tasty re-heated.

Weekends are generally fancier meals - we might make homemade rolls or
other things that take too long for a weeknight meal.

I fondly recall Sunday morning breakfasts at my grandmother's house.
The menu was always the same: bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, her
home-made waffles, syrup, molasses, and coffee. I've probably forgotten
something, because it's been a couple of decades since my last special
Sunday morning breakfast with my grandmother.

Shouldn't this be in the form of a survey? <VBG>

I always keep my favorite foods in stock but rotate so I don't tire of
anything. Never narrowed it down to days of the week, though. I just make
sure I eat a big breakfast.

LOL. I am all "surveyed-out" at the moment

My Mom was a stickler for the "this on Monday", "that on Tuesday" thing
- and I was thinking about that today, that's why I asked... but I have
trained myself out of that - got really boring However, on week-days
I tend to make the "guaranteed not to flop" stuff. Weekends I get more
adventurous and try out new recipes (like the gumbo - LOL).

My Mom did. I have a few recipes that I recycle, largely so that we
have peace at the dinner table. Broiled fish, pasta, tofu stirfry.
We're out 2-3 nights a week so it's hard to have a guaranteed set of
menus, since who knows when the leftovers will get eaten.

Being ex-pat Brits, if we have Roast Beef + Trimmings then it will
always be on a Sunday. Just doesn't feel right on any other day.

I can tell you one food we never had on Fridays. Tuna casserole. The family
joke was that when DH came home I offered him a choice of going out or
staying home and having a (mythical) tuna casserole. I never made one in my
life.

I hated tuna casserole as a kid. The past year or so, I've made an
effort to try some things again, just to see if my opinions about them
have changed. So I made a tuna casserole about a month ago (my first
time) and will never make it again! It was as bad as I remembered!

I don't have any old stand-by recipes, nor do I plan ahead. I go with
whatever we have in the fridge - which is usually slim. Right now I'm
eating a bowl of corn. Since TFM® likes meat and I can only eat fish &
veggies, that's all we do. He brings home what he feels like eating that
night and I defrost a fillet - again. He's also completely back on the
anti-carb thing, so we can't do meals together. This weekend, though, I'm
thinking about making wontons for myself. He'll be home to take me to the
store to get the ingredients. Yeah, shrimp wontons. That sounds good.
Thanks for getting my wheels turning, Cathy!

Lazy day, sunday afternoon,
Like to get your feet up, watch t.v.
Sunday roast is something good to eat,
Must be beef today cause lamb was last week.

I tend to cook more elaborate meals on weekends, since I also have more time
then.

But I really don't tend to cook any one type of food for a given day of the
week. Prior to doing my big weekly shopping trip (usually on the weekend), I
plan out a couple of meals (as well as leftover ideas) for the upcoming week
and pick up ingredients for those. I tend to remain fairly flexible as to
what nights to have each meal (with the exception of ingredients that must
be used sooner rather than later). I always also keep certain staples onhand
to whip up meals that weren't in my original weekly "plan."

I've never made one, either, Felice. :~) Eaten plenty as a kid, though.

We treat weekends the same as weekdays, probably because we both work
here at home on our house and rarely an outside job. We ask each other
what we feel like eating for the week and compare that with what's on
sale and what's in the freezer/pantry. I always want to try new things
each week so we make room for new and old all the time. PLus we may have
to cook for family and friends during the week so their tastebuds or
quirks come into play.

About the only consistent thing is that Sunday is usually stir-fry
night. That could be either chicken or beef based.

Cathy,

I just about burned out my taste buds with that jumbo pot o' mumbo gumbo
after dinner, breakfast, lunch and another dinner of the stuff. I should've
frozen more sooner!!!

Sure gave my sinuses a run for their money. <VBG>

You have any left??

I think I should revert to more frequent cookbook experiments during the
weekdays and then barge in on friends in South Africa during the weekends!

I'll bring the wine!

No.

I respond to the stimuli of the fridge, freezer and maket and figure
out what to cook based on what's there. The day of the week will
influence the time variables and the amount of cooking energy, but
it's mostly an improvisation on what I can find.

My (Scottish) grandmother (not the German one) did that, too. They were in
their 70's, retired and living on a budget. I guess it was just easier to
budget the shopping and do meal planning that way. There was only one small
grocery store in the tiny town where they lived.

When my mom, Scott and I had to briefly live with them while my dad finished
his duty assignment in Bangkok and Paul graduated from high school, Mom
contributed to their food budget for us. But it was still the same thing
every Monday, every Tuesday... Grandma did make savoury scones once in a
while on Sunday for breakfast.

We are more regular on weekends. I usually have hot wings on Saturday and
my wife prepares something for herself. Sundays we often have a roast. I
usually do the shopping on Fridays and pick up some fresh fish, but i never
know what kind until I get there and see what is available and what looks
good. The rest of the week is generally a matter of dealing with whatever
we grab out of the freezer when we remember to get something out. The
later we remember the more likely it is to be a dish involving boneless
skinless chicken breast because they thaw quickly.

I can honestly say, there is no pattern to my cooking! lol

Usually what I make is pretty spontaneous. I have never really been able to stick to
a menu plan. Of course there are certain holidays when certain food is made out of
tradition (i.e. turkey on Thanksgiving, devilled eggs on Easter Sunday, etc)...but as
for every day cooking, it's more about:
a. what kind of time frame I have
b. where the ingredients are (as in, how far I'd have to travel for them)
c. what I have on hand
d. the weather
e. if I, or anyone in our home, is sick

Other than that...we pretty much wing it

Monday through Thursday can be anything. Friday is fish night.
Saturday is usually soup and hot dogs, chili, hamburgers, barbecue
sandwiches, or spaghetti and meatballs. On Sundays it's every man for
himself.

I loved tuna noodle casserole as a kid, still do. Of course my mom
never put peas or any other vegetables in hers. Hers was noodles,
tuna, and cream of mushroom soup. For variety she would sometimes add
Velveeta cheese. I can just see all the food snobs keeling over after
reading this.

I agree, Felice. Let the food snobs go head and keel over. I still
make tuna noodle casserole just for myself once in a while. A couple
of dashes of garlic salt and crispy potato chips on top. Tasty.

No, but probably because I don't cook every night.
I cook on the weekends and make enough to be reheated
for dinner every night for a week or two. But even if
I did cook every night I probably still wouldn't do that.

My mom would do egg noodles, tuna, carrots & peas, I have no idea what the
base was. It could have been cream of mushroom, but she usually did
everything from scratch, so I don't know. Then she'd take hard boiled egg
slices and put them on the top. I dreaded that dish.

My mom did. If I remember right Wed. night was meat loaf and Fri was
always some kind of fish and Sunday was roast beef put in the oven
before going to church.

Kids are all grown and gone so I can cook what I feel like at the
time.

I had an older cousin. He got married. I knew his wife. I didn't know
her parents, but they had that meal plan. Every week the same menu. I
don't remember the details, but Monday had some food, every week. Same
for every other day. Of course the father was an engineer. The
marriage didn't last long.

Sunday after Church was always the same growing up in the 50's. Pork
chops, biscuits with cream gravy, scrambled eggs and fried potatoes
with onions. That was the only meal that was served on a certain day.
I don't know how my Mother and Grandmother planned meals. I cook
depending on what I feel like, what is in the freezer, what is on
sale, etc. Tonight I am not going to cook because I am too tired. Good
thing I have foods that I cook and freeze for days like this.

Kate, you're a woman after my own heart! When I worked I cooked like crazy
on weekends so I'd have leftovers for lunch and dinner during the week. I
was just too bone tired and stressed out after work to deal with cooking a
meal every night of the week. And I didn't even have children! But a 10
hour day and 6 hours sleep will do that to you. Being on call for tech
support will do that to you. So I cooked up a storm on weekends. Froze
most of the meals but saved a few for taking for lunch and having for dinner
during the week. The rest I could *zap* from the freezer. Then cook up a
storm again the next weekend.

(laughing) That's funny.

I'm not organized enough to follow a routine like that.
My routine is that I don't have a routine.

When the kids were growing up, I had a month-long menu plan. More of a
guide, actually, but I liked to have a wide variety of meals for the
kids/DH. I worked full time most of their growing up, but always made
it a priority to have a good meal each night. Now that the kids are
grown and gone (and I'm still working full time), I do a lot of
cooking on Saturday and hope it lasts through the week. If not...the
DH is on his own!

Anyone who's been around this ng for any length of time has seen my
whining posts about my mother's green tuna casserole. I still have
nightmares about it. The casserole, not my posts <g>

Nah. I sometimes plan ahead for what I'm cooking, but not on any
kind of weekday schedule. It wouldn't be a bad idea, it's just not
something I tend to do.

Weekdays and weekends have become almost meaningless since I started
working at home. :-)

We *love* tuna casserole around here. With peas and onions and
cheese and cream sauce, yum.
