Default I need a gas range

I need a 30" gas range to replace my ailing aging piece of crap and I am
looking in the usual category of no frills and good design & function,
not flimsy, etc. It doesn't need to be beautiful, it just needs to work
well and cost less than $500.00. Do they all come with a broiler? It
needs a broiler too. Any suggestions....?

Costs less than $500? Lots of luck with that. Maybe $1500.

If all you want is no frills and heat, $500 will do it. They'll all
come with a broiler -- though most of them will be under the oven
:-( Just don't expect whatever you buy to last as long as your old
one did -- lower-priced appliances just don't last as long as they
did back in the day.

As others mentioned, shop at a local appliance store. Ask if they
have a clearance corner or scratch-n-dent area. You can get some
excellent deals on nice appliances if you can handle last year's
model, a floor demo, or a small scratch someplace that's usually not
visible once the appliance is in place. In larger cities, Sears
often has an outlet with some very good deals (not always Kenmore,
either).

I would avoid Maytag and Amana until Whirlpool (new owners) gets
their act in gear. Whirlpool makes some good appliances under their
own brand and under the Roper and Estate brands (their
"builder-grade" lines). If you live near a Costco, their Kirkland
brand is made by Whirlpool. Similarly, Hotpoint is GE's no-frills
brand. Frigidaire doesn't offer a less-expensive line, but IME they
come in with a few more features at the same price as Whirlpool/GE.
All of these companies manufacture appliances for Sears, to Sears'
specs, so whatever holds true for the "real" brand also likely will
hold true for Kenmore.

Before you end up back here all bruised & bloodied due to a bad experience
with Sears, Home Despot or Lowe's, open your yellow pages and look under
"appliances - sales" or some such thing. Try and find a locally owned store
that also offers service. Many of these stores participate in a large buying
group whose name I forget. It allows them to compete with the big stores,
and you may be happily surprised at their prices. I bought my appliances
through a place like that 2 years ago. In my previous home, I dealt with the
same place for many years. When I needed service, it seemed they were there
before I hung up the phone. They have a parts department with a person I can
actually speak to, and he saved me some serious money when I had to fix the
one appliance that came with this house. This store's been in business for
40 years, and it continues to expand, even with competition from the
theoretical "discounters", like Lowe's, which is right around the corner.

This is the kind of store you want to deal with.

I agree. I worked for Whirlpool way back when Best Buy was just getting
started in Minnenoplace and learned when I repeatedly heard the service
manager say "Best Buy Sucks" that local dealers are the place to go.
I'm glad the Best Buy's etc haven't extinguished them all.

If anyone in the Seattle area can recommend a local dealer I'm all ears.
I found a good one in Tacoma when I bought the washer/dryer but it's
kind of a long ways from here... but I might go back.

I couldn't agree with you more. If you find that kind of place you will not
be
sorry. I have a place like that, they've been around forever, and I know
just where to go when I need appliances/tvs/whatever. They are a treasure,
and a pleasure to do business with. They compete just fine with the big
stores,
pricewise, too; thank you very much.

My last experience with the sto My Kenmore dishwasher wasn't draining
correctly. I narrowed down the problem to a plastic fitting, about the size
of one of those things you use to reseal a wine bottle. It was clogged with
food in such a way that I didn't see that there was a rubber flap in there,
too. I ruined the flap with the pointy tool I used to remove the food
debris.

Called the store, gave him the model number. He cross referenced it to the
actual manufacturer - Maytag, if I recall. "$6.00 and I'll have it for you
tomorrow". Instant love. When I went to get the part, he turned his computer
screen around to show me an exploded parts diagram. He said "If it's still
not draining right, check this that & the other thing". More instant love.
Luckily, the six dollar part did the trick.

On Lung Guyland I used to do all my appliance shopping at P. C.
Richards & Son; huge selection, many locations, terrific service, free
delivery, and better prices than the national chain department
stores. http://www.pcrichard.com/home.jsp

Somehow I don't remember Crazy Eddie selling appliances, only
electronics... but I never shopped there.

He did. After his empire crashed, he fled to Israel w/about $50million, but
eventually ended up in prison.

Agree, we have 2 mom & pop appliance stores in the area. Both are
dependable and competitive.

I bought a Tappan 2 years ago, w/broiler. Around $450. Works fine for my
purposes. Try a local appliance store. I did find that most appliance stores
tried to sell me a self-cleaner, no broiler.

You mean broiler in the oven, rather than underneath. Personally, I'd
try to find the money to get those things because they make life easier,
and you'll have that oven for a long time, with any luck.

But that's me.

Hey, tert, I was looking around for someone else's answer
and came across this on the GE website:

http://products.geappliances.com/App...W&SITEID=G EA

or

http://preview.tinyurl.com/3yrdcg

Looks good to me and perhaps you can find it cheaper.
$519 ... seems in line with your price range.

I got a Hot Point, sveral years ago, for less than $400 and it is
wonderful. It has a broiler, indeed- in the oven part, and it is self
cleaning. It has great gas burners on the top and it works great!

There is a drawer under he oven but that holds my baking hseets etc.

I would recommend eh Hot Point I have. If you ned more info, I'll try
and get t for you.

Good luck.
