Default icemaker has stinky/powdery ice problem

I have a GE refrigerator/freezer with an icemaker..the kind where you can
get ice cubes, crushed ice or water out of the freezer door. The ice stinks
and has powder in and on it...the metal in the unit stinks and collects
powder on it too. Some of the ice comes through with green slime....I've
taken the icemaker apart washed it many times and we still wind up with
this.... ...any help or input would be very much
appreciated.
Thank you
Sheli

Are you using filtered water? Are there any additives in your water
recently? What are GEs instructions re problems like this? We have an
Amani with same features and have never had a problem. Maybe turn off the
icemaker, clean everything out and make another batch, throw it out and
start again. Good luck.

We have a water softener hooked up - that is all we use for filtering water
in the house, this has been an ongoing problem for 2 years, worked great the
first few years. Only instructions we've found in the booklet is that the
water filter needs to be replaced, but that is only included on some
models...we checked inside where it says it should be located and there
isn't a filter there....I've taken it apart numerous times and cleaned,
soaked the plastic in baking soda water, some of the metal has rust on it
now...have emailed some repair shops to see if they had any idea and one
said it may be the rust causing it, but the rust is a newer thing - happened
way after the stinky ice problem, so I don't think it would be that.
