He said it wasn't good with <any> kind of charcoal. It worked best with wood, burning hardwood to coals. After it was going, he used lump in it as well with good results. IIRC, he wasn't sure he would do it again as it is great for big barbecues, but but really inefficient for a couple of briskets or butts. Robert |

The pit with the over and under 55 gallon drums. It has been around for a long time, but I have only seen a couple of pictures of it built. There are some really interesting pits here, although how practical some are might be point of debate. http://www.neatorama.com/2006/06/08/...st-bbq-grills/ The boys over at http://www.smokingmeatforums.com are really fond of their UDS pits (Ugly Drum Smoker) and they turn out some hellacious looking meat on them. If you join you can search for lots of info there. They work like a giant WSM, but they hold 3X as much. Here's another version http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/sh...ht=redneck+uds That is popular as well. Note that the welding can easily be replaced by fittings that have nuts on both sides. If it were just more than me and and the missus with occasional company, I would build one of them. I have seen a lot of variations on this type of smoker, but there are plenty of successful plans available for free. Some have lifting handles, some roll around, some have access doors, some have multiple thermos, you name it. These are so popular there are guys on some of the sites that build them for money!
