Barbecue (alt.food.barbecue) Discuss barbecue and grilling--southern style "low and slow" smoking of ribs, shoulders and briskets, as well as direct heat grilling of everything from burgers to salmon to vegetables.

Default Good Meat Thermometer with Remote Probe?

I would like to find a decent meat thermometer that I can use in both
an oven and a grill. Any ideas?

The only one I found on Google is the Acu-Rite 00667. Anyone use this
thermometer?

As long as your cooking temps are below 392ºF (that's the company max, I
would keep below around 350ºF), the Maverick ET-73 is a good thermometer. It
can measure both oven/grill temp as well as meat temp. It also has alarms on
both temps and is remote reading.

If you mean remote as in attached with an umbilical cable you just can't go
wrong with a Polder.

I keep hearing about probes that fail early and often, and that a grill
is too hot to use for the probe...

Well, I had my original for about 10 yrs. and never burnt out a probe. I knew it
would flame out above about 400 dF so I just didn't do that.

The only reason I finally replaced it was because the Start/Stop button wore
out.

You could use one that uses a thermocouple for the sensor.
I think thermocouple wire will survive pretty high temperatures.

Even more expensive would be a system using an RTD as the
sensor.
