I was in Wal-Mart this evening and spotted a 12 inch probe thermometer that
goes from 50 to 500 degrees. For only...hold your breath... $2.97. The
package says it is for testing oil temperatures in a deep fryer. Can these
be used to test the air temperature inside of a smoker as well?

That's what I used mine for, but it fell apart rather quickly. It did fine
as an oil temp probe, but exposure to the smoke seemed to make it fall
apart.

On the other hand, for the price you can purchase several.
