Default Charcoal....what do you use & why?

O.K., so after many years as a briquettes user, I finally got it. That
stuff stinks!! I mean it smells bad and really is a mess compared to lump.

Here in losocal (San Diego) I found Cowboy Lump (at Lowe's). Burns VERY
HOT, but also had a bit of a smell like chemicals burning at start up.

Maybe you can help.

What kind of Charcoal do you use?

Where do you get it?

Are there any places you know of in Southern California (bbq all year round
here) that sells good charcoal for grilling and smoking foods?

I use a Weber kettle and have perfected baking chickens, ribs and other
meats at 250° or so (my kettle has a thermometer built into the lid).

Anyway, just looking for ways to improve the cooking!

TIA

Real Flavor lump

Where do you get it?

Wal-Mart. In my area, it's available only during the summer, so stock
up.

Well, ya finally woke up. Congratulations!

I've found lumps of real coal in the Coyboy brand. I think that it *would* give
a nasty, chemical-like smell/taste.

Maybe you can help.

Kamado extruded coconut lump

Where do you get it?

www.kamado.com or, preferably call them at 1-888-kamados (1-888-526-2367)

How far away is Sacramento?

I just "imported" 2000 pounds of the Kamado lump into Florida. It would cost
you much less in shipping than it did for me.

About 9 hours on interstate 5.

Cowboy brand bites. I'm in the SFBA and buy from Lazzari, and they import
their stuff from Mexico. I'd suggest you look in the Yellow pages under
"wood", or check out restaraunt supply houses, they'll sell to you too. Or,
look across the border in TJ, bet there's some good cheap OAK hardwood lump
there.
Course, you'll want to look up "oak" in the spanish/english dictionary. Good
luck.

Sacramento, is ~ 600 miles from where the OP lives, in San Diego. However, I
live just outside Sac and commute dailey through there. Are there good BBQ
sources on which I've yet to stumble.

If you can't drive up to Brisbane (south of San Francisco) to buy 40#
Lazzari lump from the source, Barbecues Galore sells Lazzari hardwood
lump in the 20# size.

Mesquite lump burns hotter and is more bitter than oak or hickory lump.
But you takes what you gets, and it is better than K*ngsford (IMO).

Try these places for Royal Oak lump. They're on the Do It Best
Hardware site so if they don't have it in stock, they can order it in
for ya.

These are prices as of January (last time I purchased
any):

Smart and Final mesquite lump 40 lbs. $13-14

Lazzari oak/hickory lump 40 lbs. $10.49 at Lazzari
warehouse in Brisbane, CA

With luck you can find a distributor like Lazzari
in your area.

According to the email I got from Lazzari in November 2003:

"It is also available in 20 lb. bags at Barbecues Galore stores. The
bags are labeled BBQ Galore, hardwood lump charcoal, with the SKU #
279612. If the bag has a different SKU # then it was produced by a
prior vendor and it is not oak."

Cool, now I got an emergency weekend source. Thank you much Nathan, good
info.
