Default wine racks

I am doing my basement over and installing a bar, wine cellar. I have seen
various wine racks which seem to be the most efficient for space to bottle
ratio. I am also looking for plans. Any recommendations would be great.

For comparison, you might check out Seville Classis at
http://www.sevilleclassics.com/products.htm
They make some very nice chrome plated racks that are relatively cheap and
nice looking in the right setting. I have several of them that I got very
cheaply at Sam's. Of course things come and go at Sam's so you never know
that you will find what you want there. I even bought one extra one that I
cannibalized to add extra shelves to the others.

Now if you really want a do-it-yourself project check out some of the plans
that others may provide.

You can buy the same one off of amazon from "The Wine Enthusiast". The
rack and the shipping are cheaper plus it's actually made by seville.

Maybe I will when my ears stop ringing. Then again, I am a winemaker, that
does not mean I make everything.

I've built racks before. I build a 400 bottle rack system for my
neighbor. It's just finding the time to make one that I like. This one
was $140 delivered. Saved me a bunch of time.

Especially if you don't have the tools. The design someone posted would
require lots of champs and a few power tools that many might not have.

I plan on building a nice wine rack/cabinet system for behind my bar in
the basement for the time being I just need somewhere to put my bottles
so I opted for the metal one.

As mentioned, some of us just don't have the time or tools or place to
build a rack.

Marty. I looked at the Wine Enthusiast racks and they have the Seville
metal rack for $129.95 + shipping. Sams online has the same rack for
about $80 delivered. (I think it was $60 or so + the freight to my
location, I forget the exact numbers now but it totalled about $80)

I wish I could find the Seville birch wine rack (70 bottle) for cheaper
somewhere, but so far no luck.

I got a couple books on cellaring wine.

If you want racks that will display wine, then you will have to
sacrifice space and vice versa. For instance, the most efficine use of
space is a deeper shelf that you stack two bottles deep neck to neck
in.

How and Why to Build a Wine Cellar 3rd Ed. by Richard M. Gold Ph.D.
and PhD Richard M. Gold " This title is the most utilitarian one that
i have and has the most efficient use of space.

The Home Wine Cellar: A Complete Guide To Design And Construction
(Hardcover)
by Perry Sims, Robert J. Dolezal, Victoria Cebalo-Irwin (Editor), Rich
Binsacca (Editor), John M. Rickard (Photographer), Jerry Bates
(Photographer), James Wilson (Photographer)

That book has the most elegant examples of cellars, with the most
inefficient use of space. Somewhere inbetween you will have both
elegance and efficient storage.

I built a wine rack in the basement out of luan and 1x2. It holds
about 175 bottles and fits neatly under the stairs- only complaint? I
forgot that luan is 1/4" and by the time you add that in you can't fit
4 bottles flat on the bottom Total cost was around 35$- stained it
deep mahogany.

Next rack will be built to hold bottles at a 45 degree angle. I have
about 120 magnums (empty, currently) for use and I figure that is the
most efficient method for holding them. With the new planer I'm
expecting a slightly better quality design

And yes- buying it is most definately easier than building it. Almost
worth it (not quite in my opinion... but I like building).

That sounds great. Are in a position to refer us to a pictorial design so
we can try to build the same thing.

TIA
