Default FAQ: rec.crafts.distilling

This is a FAQ for rec.crafts.distilling. Currently this FAQ is in it's
early stages, but will be improved over time.

This FAQ can be found at http://www.distilling.netfirms.com/

Here is a link so you may read messages in this newsgroup:
http://groups.google.com/groups?grou...fts.distilling

1. What is the charter for rec.crafts.distilling?

Rec.crafts.distilling is a news group dedicated to the discussion
of the legalities, process, recipes, tips, techniques and general
exchange of lore on the process, methods and history of distilling
alchohol. The above list is not considered exhaustive, and if a
discussion is of interest to distillers it may be deemed as
appropriate. Discussion on distilling water, botanicals, or anything
else that is applicable to the distillation process, is also
appropriate. Commercial postings are permitted, but no more than
one posting in two months. No binaries except PGP signatures and
similar small binaries.

2. My news server doesn't seem to have the newsgroup rec.crafts.distilling,
how do I access it?

It seems it takes time for new newsgroups to propagate, so this newsgroup
may not be found on all news servers. Use the above link to Google to read
this newsgroup, if it is not available on your news server. If you want to
post messages to this newsgroup, you may wish to sign up for an account at
http://news.individual.net/, where they will give you free access to their
news server and allow you to post messages on this newsgroup.

3. Isn't distilling illegal?

In many countries, home distilling is illegal. However, in some countries
like New Zealand, it is not. The usenet is a world-wide forum and it is
generally not illegal to discuss distilling processes.

4. Where can I find more information about distilling?

The website http://www.homedistiller.org/ is one of the best resources, and
it links to other sites as well.

5. Where can I buy turbo yeasts, flavorings, etc?

USA: http://www.brewhaus.com/
Canada: http://www.brewhaus.ca/
Europe: http://www.partyman.se/

6. How do I use a home water distiller to produce alcohol?

See http://www.homedistiller.org/ See sections on Distilling the Wash:
Stripping, Double Distilling, and Using a Water Distiller as a Pot Still.

7. What process can I use to extract alcohol out of a wine/mead by freezing?

See http://www.fermatorium.com/fermentation/mead/freeze/

8. How can I inexpensively make Port wines?

See answer #7, above. This technique can also be used to produce Port style
wines, as an alternative to fortification. You could also steam distill
your own brandy or sugar water and fortify that way.

9. I want to make some home made Liqueurs. Where can I find some recipies?

Have a look at Gunther Anderson's Liqueur Making Liqueur Making.
http://www.guntheranderson.com/liqueurs.htm. Please post your favorite
recipies on the newsgroup as well!

Now surely this is more off topic than posting about an ebay auction. Am I
the first to jump on it? Or is FAQ posting from other newsgroups considered
'on topic' ? What if I have a FAQ that I'm auctioning on ebay? Is that cool
to link to? :-D

Just thought I'd try and stir up some trouble, you guys can relax now, heh
heh.

The subject of distillation comes up for conversation in the winemaking,
meadmaking, and brewing newsgroups, due to the nature of discussion in those
newsgroups (producing alcohol for consumption). Many people think it is
appropriate to ask questions or discuss distillation in these newsgroups --
if you don't believe me, search for "distillation" in the above newsgroups.
:-) Because these people don't know where else to go, and since this r.c.d
is relatively new, many people don't know that this newsgroup exists.
Therefore, the main purpopse of this infrequent FAQ posting is so that
people are aware of r.c.d, and that if they have questions about
distillation (for example asking questions about distilling wine in the
winemaking newsgroup), it may be more appropriate to post in r.c.d instead.

According to the protocol and code of conduct of the usenet, this sort of
FAQ posting is considered entirely acceptable and appopriate, and generally
serves the interests of all the members of the crossposted newsgroups.

No, it isn't, and it doesn't. If people frequently ask
in rcb (or rcm, or rcw) about distilling, the rcb (and rcm,
and rcw) general newsgroup FAQ should address the issue
by pointing people to appropriate group(s0 in which to
discuss distilling.
Putting a FAQ for one newsgroup in other newsgroups
is, at the very best, questionable. In this case, based
on my 3000 centuries (slight overstatement) of USENET
reading, posting, and activism, it is quite simply
inappropriate.

Mead beer and wine all get cross posted questions ... but
they don't post there FAQ's on the other newsgroups. What
your doing is ADVERTISING YOUR PET PROJECT.
I am in the RCM I don't go trying to increase our posting
in this newsgroup by Spamming RCB or RCW

I agree with Joel, you have a distilling newsgroup, you've
been advertising it here for months, I'd prefer you to stop
now. The subject of distilling RARELY comes up and for
good reasons... most notably illegality for the vast majority
of participants in this N.G. sure, if your in New Zealand or
somewhere you might be leagal... go to the appropriate
newsgroup. Sure occasionally someone asks... and they get
told Illeagle in US, not appropriate for this newsgroup, RCD
exists if they want to research further.

Now if you want to put together a comprehensive meadmaking
FAQ then you can include a link to your moonshine newsgroup
as the answer to the question about distilling mead... just be sure
to include the fact that in the US and many other countries home
distillation of alchoholic spirits is against the law.
