I was just at Target and they have a 2 gallon glass jar with lid from
Anchor Hocking; it looks perfect for vinegar making. I'll just make a standoff for the lid if necessary. (Getting the acetate 'mother' out of a carboy can be a lot of work, mine are very thick.) 2 gallon batches are about the perfect size. I'm sure these are available elsewhere too; they look like the thing you would run into at the bargain stores down the road. Joe |

I have tried to make vinegar many times and always the same result. It smells and tastes good at first and then when I try to get it grow it turns stinky. Some kind of bacteria smell not the vinegar smell. I buy the mother and add that to 2/3 wine. That gives me 1/2L. Then after a month or so I take that and mix it with 1l of wine into a 1 gal jar. Then after a few months it starts to smell bad? any ideas would be appreciated. thanks Joe |

Hi Dick,

I paid 13 dollars for it and I use it to ferment my one gallon batches of wine. Anne |

Great idea - I have a friend who owns a Deli and will ask him to save me a pickle jar! Thanks. Come think of it - I have a one gallon jar in my downstairs fridge. But it has Kim Chi in it. It would need to thoroughly cleaned, rinsed with bleach, sterilized, and pass the smell test before sanitizing! Dick |
