I needed a Burgundy fix last night and I haven't really touched the
2006's that I bought on release so I grabbed a bottle of 2006 Denis Mortet Gevrey Chambertin "Les Champeaux" to go with our mushroom and duck risotto. Brilliant Burgundy red in the glass. Really perfumed nose of exotic spices, black cherries and musk. My wife comented that she didn't need to drink the wine...she could just smell it all evening. Medium weight in the glass the first impression is of pure Pinot fruit flavors. Red and black cherries, red raspberry and an underlying earthy quality. There is a farily strong mineral quality that alwasy remeinds me of Gevrey dirt. The tannins are slightly drying on the finish but pleasantly so. This wine backs away a bit from the Mortet house style of the past which seemed to focus on concentration and ripeness. "A-" |
