My turn to cook, I made Beschwipster*Huhn (German drunken chicken in
red wine), Cuban black beans and rice, and asparagus. Wine was the 2004 Giovanni Manzone "Castelletto" Barolo. Picked this up in a recent Zachys sale for $22. Tannins are round and soft enough to think of this as modern styled Barolo, but there isn't a lot of new oak apparent. Red raspberry and cherry fruit, a little pipesmoke and tar, friendly enough. Round or not, the tannins are quite apparent, so I think a few years of age will do this some good. Don't think it's a long ager, but a nice wine (about as good as you're going to get in under $25 Barolo!). B Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency. |
