It could be argued that I've had no love affair of longer standing than
the one I have with Ridge Geyserville (yes, it even predates my
relationship with Jean). Tonight, as we continue to hunker down in
response to subzero temperatures outdoors, I threw together a bunch of
stuff in our fridge and freezer in a makeshift paella. With that, I opened:

2001 Ridge Geyserville
nose: raspberries, oak, eucalyptus
palate: medium-full body, creamy mouthfeel, overt oakiness

The back label notes from Paul Draper note that this, the 40th
Anniversary bottling of Geyserville (geez, I missed the first 20
years!), should reach maturity within 7-10 years of bottling (10/02)
Although our bottle was a quintessential fruit bomb, I think I will give
my remaining bottles another few years in the cellar to integrate the
remaining oak.

I just saw the 2004 Geyserville with a big banner across the front
saying that it was the 40th anniversary bottling. Ridge showed up
in Geyserville in 1966. It is hard to put those numbers together.
Even harder for the 2001 when you wonder how that predated the founding
of the winery.

I thought it was the 2005 that was the 40th Anniversary bottling of
Geyserville? And that 2001 was the 40th vintages of the winery ('62
was first legal Monte Bello)?

I think that you've got it, Dale. Looking more carefully at the back
label tonight, it reads "40th Anniversary 1962-2001" at the top and on
the bottom "Since 1962, Ridge has championed single vineyard winemaking..."

I'll go down to the cellar and look at the '04 and '05 later.
