TN: A tale of 2 Rieslings (Alsace)
I had picked up some smoked pork chops, Betsy decided to give me an
early Christmas present by making choucroute. Kraut, Riesling, chops, weiners, brats combined into a wonderful dish. A couple of Alsace Rieslings: 1996 Schoffit "Cuvee Prestige" I gave some of this to Betsy for the recipe, somehow I was out of basic Trimbach. The remainder showed petrol, yelloruits, some residual sugar, a bit of smoke. A slightly oily texture. This was certainly alive, but I never truly warmed to it, seemed like it was striving for Zind-Humbrechtism and falling short. B- 2001 Boxler Sommerberg (L31E) This was however quite lovely. Young, crisp, tense, total infanticide, though I managed to enjoy. Big, acidic backbone, just a hint of sugar, great concentration and length. A- Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency. * |
