Default Vegan books for newbies?

I'm looking for some vegan books for people who are just starting. I'm
not talking about books that explains only the positive effect of vegan
life as opposed to SAD life; I'm already past that stage. I want some
books that deal with effective ways newbies should use to get into the
vegan lifestyle.

150 Vegan Favorites by Jay Solomon -- good food but he gives some dishes
pretty lame names (I just renamed them for our family lingo).

I would wait a while before buying nutrition books from the VRG.

Some of their nutrition information is dated ( they are revising their
materials ).

In my opinion, you should consider " The Food Revolution" by John
Robbins and "Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating" by John Marcus. I found
both to be interesting and informative reads. You won't find any
recipes, but you will find detailed information about health and
nutrition. See if they are available in your local library.

I recently read Marcus's book. The nutrition info is also out of date.

A lot of new stuff has come out recently.

A very thorough and up to date book would be

Becoming Vegan
Brenda Davis, R.D. & Vesanto Melina, M.S., R.D.
Published 2000. ISBN 1-57067-103-6

or

The New Becoming Vegetarian
Brenda Davis, R.D. & Vesanto Melina, M.S., R.D.
Published 2003. ISBN 1570671443
( covers veganism )

I also think a new vegan could do very will with the vegan starter kit
from veganoutreach:

· Vegans contribute to the deaths of animals by their use of
wood and paper products, electricity, roads and all types of
buildings, their own diet, etc... just as everyone else does.
What they try to avoid are products which provide life
(and death) for farm animals, but even then they would have
to avoid the following in order to be successful:

The meat industry provides life for the animals that it
slaughters, and the animals live and die in it as they do
in any other habitat. They also depend on it for their
lives like the animals in any other habitat. If people
consume animal products from animals they think are
raised in decent ways, they will be promoting life for
more such animals in the future.
From the life and death of a thousand pound grass raised
steer and whatever he happens to kill during his life, people
get over 500 pounds of human consumable meat. From a grass
raised dairy cow people get thousands of servings of dairy
products. Due to the influence of farm machinery, and *icides,
and in the case of rice the flooding and draining of fields,
one serving of soy or rice based product is likely to involve
more animal deaths than hundreds of servings derived from grass
raised cattle. Grass raised cattle products contribute to less
wildlife deaths, better wildlife habitat, and decent lives for
cattle. ·
