but it had casein in it (or maybe it was whey), but I'm not sure if that's

I never heard of Soymilk with either whey or casein in it. It sounds
abit strange. Allthough hard veggie cheese (I hope its called hard in
English) are a bit hard to find (allthough there is one sort found in
Sweden). It is as you ask a characterisc of dairy milk, and mostly not
found in non-dairy milk (soymilk, ricemilk, wheatmilk and so on)

Casein is a group of 8 proteins found in cow milk. These proteins
cause congestion and mucosa in people.

"Vegan" cheeses with casein, caseinate, or sodium caseinate can
hardly be called vegan.

Best to avoid them.

yeah, i think the ones called 'veggie' slices are lacto-veg (unlike many
dairy cheeses with rennet) but not vegan. i think your best bet is to go
for the kind that are called 'vegan slices' i think...i have these 'american
flavour' ones, i think they might be made by soymage...they make great
grilled uncheese.

Casein is a milk product added to vegetarian cheese for texture. It's
vegetarian, but not vegan.
