tofu does not give me, or my family, gas...

have you eaten it before? sometimes it takes a little getting used to
when we introduce a new food to our system. eat it a few more time and
you may find the problem subsides.

in the meantime, send some of that gas up here... it's 15 below outside
and the fuel company can't deliver until friday. anything combustable
will help!

Use some epazote when you cook any kind of bean dish. It is supposed to
eliminate the gaseous outcome. :-)
Beans are a great toxin remover and perhaps the gas is just a sign that they
are doing their "Detoxifying" job.

According to whom? Gas is a sign of incomplete indigestion (and the
resultant fermentation) of oligosaccharides. Our bodies can't digest
most oligosaccharides, and they're found in high concentration in
legumes. While they have some effect similar to soluble fiber, they do
cause a lot more digestive stress. Perhaps you'd do better to read
scientific literature than pseudoscientific yoga crap.

No, gas is emanated by bacteria in the large intestines as they assimilate
undigested sugars in beans.

You shouldn't eat so much soy anyway. The isoflavones everyone rants
about are phyto-estrogens -- plant-based estrogens that have the same
effects on your body as any other estrogens. Estrogens are feminizing.
Studies have shown that overconsumption of soy can lead to feminizing of
males.

Ok....thanks for all the great info. I truly appreciate EVERYONE's input.

I am going to try June's suggestion as I still enjoy the taste and texture
of tofu and tempeh. As for the info regarding feminization of
males......put it this way pal......my girlfirend would definately beg to
differ with you, as well I will.

We, after some years of eating soy, each enjoying much of the same diet,
will conclude that it's the soy products that puts the lead in my pencil and
then so be it. I don't consume any animal based products and do well ingest
ample amounts of protein (actually rice based). Now, I will be even more
pleased with this nutritional program after ridding the nuisance methane!!
Thanks again to June. And once again thanks to all for the input.

I don't think Rick eats any soy at all. In any event, neither strikes me
as effeminate or otherwise homo-oriented. Maybe you're projecting?

Nope. Why would anyone in their right mind eat soy?

Why would anyone in their right mind feed it to children?

Oh yeah, I forgot, you're vegan, so being in your 'right mind' is obviously
not an option to begin with...

There's an enzyme you can buy, it's called Beano. Put a few drops on the
first bite you eat and you shouldn't get as much gas.

You could also take Maalox Plus or a similar anti-gas antacid a little while
after you eat.
