Default How much caffeine in decaffeinated tea?

I gave up caffeine about 3 weeks ago. Now that the withdrawals are
over i'm trying to figure out what the benefit is, but that's a whole
nother story.

Anyway, i rediscovered tea, albeit decaffeinated. The box says
there's about 5mg caffeine in it, which i expected and am not really
concerened about. BUT, i make my tea very strong, as in i like to let
it steep even while i'm drinking it and will even use that tea bag
along with a new one in subsequet cups. I swear i'm getting a little
caffeine buzz. Could i be getting much more than 5mg?

Thanks, -JZ

Nearly all the caffeine comes out in the first 30 seconds of the first
steeping.

As for whether there's more than 5mg, *shrug*.

In fact, one can almost decaffeinate one's own loose leaf tea by
steeping for 30 seconds, then discarding that steep, and then steeping
normally.

Part of the "buzz" might come from multiple cups.

I think you're still a caffeine hound and that's why you are keeping
that decaf tea bag going even through a second cup. ;-)

Still, I kind of doubt you are getting a buzz from the caffeine. Do you
get a buzz from a 12 oz. cola (30-35 mg caffeine)?

Since most of the caffeine is gone in 30 seconds (as already mentioned
here), I don't think you're getting much more by steeping the bag
continuosly. Over steeping causes bitterness not elevated caffeine.

Now, maybe if you put 6 or 7 of those bags into 6 oz of water, I might
believe you're getting a caffeine buzz. ;-)

For the answer to this question, you'll have to do the math: Multiply 5mg
by the number of teabags you're using.

I wasn't going to say anything but...Reusing teabags? Eeewwwww! Are you
aware that the smaller particles (dust, fannings) used in teabags release
their flavor much faster than broken or whole leaves and you're not gaining
decent, appreciable flavor when you reuse a teabag?

Of course, if you're doing it for the color... <shrug>.
