a good seafood restaurant in san francisco will likely cost you money, but
it will be worth it.

if you like crab and asian food, a really great place to go is Crustacean
which you can take the cable car to on the california st. line (see
citysearch san francisco for description). their sister restaurant, Thanh
Long, is a little cheaper b/c it's way out in the sunset district, but it's
worth the trek. that is also accessible via public transportation, the N
Judah Muni line, so if you're staying downtown you can access it w/o an
expensive taxi.

if you want a restaurant w/ a fairly good menu, Scoma's in Fisherman's wharf
is a nice choice, but get reservations in advance. they aren't so pricey,
but they aren't cheap.

you can also buy crab and other fare at the fish market where vendors will
have freshly cooked crab that they'll crack for you, but they will serve it
to you at varying prices/lb. the last time I was there was in the fall last
year and they were charging $22/lb. IMO, if you're going to pay that much
at the curb, might as well go into the comforts of a good restaurant and
spend a little more and get accompaniments w/ your meal

hth.

I haven't been to San Francisco in years, but my favorite restaurants
were-
Wing Lee, a very homey Chinese place, near Polk St, very inexpensive,
but the food was always great, and the portions huge. And a Mexican
place called Mom's,a family run place with authentic Mexican fare and
a very fun casual atmosphere. And lastly a Cambodian place called
Angkor Boray(sp?), which I was skeptical to try, but our friends
insisted we'd luv it and we did. It is near the Pacific Heights area.
