Default Cooking Utensil Question

The other day, my friend bought a food mill. Inside the package, was a
round cage of wire (about 2 inches in diameter). Inside the cage was a
little plastic bag that contained a small, grey ball (about 1/2 inch in
diameter).

The package didn't list this item as part of the food mill.

Does anyone know what it is? What it's used for?

Thanks.
