Default OT - Sick Computer and MasterCook

Just wanted to let you guys know. I'm not sure how much longer I can
use my computer. My hard drive seems to be crumbling. Some things
work, others don't. If we can't fix it, I'll be gone for at least a
month.

Once everything is either stabilized or repaired, I'll be asking people
for any copies they have of my cookbook and my mom's. None of the
others are critical.

Currently, my recipes are all showing up individually, but doing
anything with the "Carol" cookbook freezes MasterCook solid.

Over and out (hopefully not for long),
Carol

Get a new hard drive roughly priced at $100, and a copy of Norton Ghost
(About $60). You can clone the old drive to the new and Ghost also does
dynamic sizing. If your old drive was 40GB and the new one 160GB it'll
dynamically size the drive giving you an additional 120GB of space on
the volume.

I've been using it for years. It most recently saved a server that some
nitwit had configured as RAID 0 with a two drive setup. When one drive
started crapping out all bets were off. Thing was, it was intermitent.

I was able to use Ghost to image it to a RAID 1 drive set. Then replaced
the bad drive and mirrored it back forming a RAID 10 set.

Another good thing to have is Knoppix. It's a CD bootable Linux
distribution with the KDE (K Desktop Environment) that reads NTFS
volumes and can connect to pretty much anything via NFS, SMB (SMB is
Windows Server Message Blocks - which is how Windows does file shares.)

Knoppix is free to download and create a bootable CD from.

Carol,

You must find a way to fix it! 'At least a month' is far, far too
long...

I have received an e-mail from a trusted friend, recommending that I
install this patch:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-001.mspx

Please consider installing it if you run Windows.

Now I've just got to see how much damage has been done on my system.

I tried posting a few minutes ago, but the post hasn't shown up. If
you're running Windows, consider installing the following patch:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-001.mspx
It's a serious, serious problem.

I received this info in e-mail after my initial post. Thanks,
mysterious stranger!

My computer crashed - again. Crash reformatted it - again. I need
people's e-mail addresses - again. I'm tearing out my hair - again.

I need Mom's recipes, which I didn't find the last time around. Does
anyone have that cookbook? I've got my own recipes taken care of.
Thanks, Dora!

Barb, I'm taking your advice and writing everything down. Thanks for
the tip!

I appreciate everyone's patience and willingness to help a Damsel in
distress.

Thank you very kindly!

Carol, I just e-mailed you the Mastercook cookbook I have of your mother's
recipes. I think it may be all if not most of them. At least it's a
start.

Backup, backup, backup! There's no need to maintain written records of
any computerized information if you do backups on a regular basis.

God bless you, Wayne. I was devastated at the thought of losing them.
