You'd starve at my house.

What is "normal"? I don't eat organ meats, insects, snails or sushi
(all for different reasons). I am extremely particular about what
seafood I will eat - I have to buy it fresh and prepare it, or know who
is preparing it. I dislike lima beans and okra. Almost anything else
is fair game.

The items you mentioned are all favorites of mine on pizza! But I don't
like caraway: No seeded rye bread, no aquavit, only "non-standard"
harissa...

That's interesting. I don't like caraway either, but its flavor doesn't
bother me in aquavit. I love the stuff, all different kinds! Yet another
vice I can attribute to the spousal unit.

I agree about the caraway in rye bread. It is disgusting. I don't mind it in
Aquavit. I keep a bottle in the freezer and have an ice cold shot once in a
while, usually with some smoked eel. It is a great combination.

Thanks for the proper spelling. My mind was out of commission when I
wrote that. I knew it was wrong, but didn't know how to correct it.

Boy, ain't that the truth! There's no telling what could happen in the
family if a caraway lover and a non-caraway lover wed. Pffft!

It would be tragic. Sleeping in separate rooms, me eating reubens and
him eating peanut butter on Wonder bread. The humanity!

:P~~~ Things work out surprisingly well, actually.

He eats caraway and the dreaded fennel (even those loathesome "Turkish
Pepper" candies -- hard, black, salted licorice on the outside, some
revoltingly spicy liquid on the inside), and I don't. And, even as a
caraway-seed despiser, I'll take a good reuben -- just on Orowheat's Dill
Rye bread (do they still make that? The dill seemed to make the few caraway
seeds tolerable ).

Now, me being a morning person and him being a *serious* night person is
much more problematic. And don't get me started on the snoring.

Oh, I'll scarf down a reuben sandwich as quickly as the next guy. I'll just
put it on unseeded rye bread.

Sweet squashes, yams, sweet potatoes (except when made into pies.) Just
cannot eat them. And I've even gotten natto down (with the help of a lot of
sake.)

Bell peppers...

I adore Olives and Mushrooms, but have only recently learned to
appreciate COOKED onions. Still detest them raw.....

Not overly fond of beets either and will only eat carrots cooked.
No shredded coconut either thank you! Like trying to swallow shredded
paper.

And then there is Cilantro and Arugula..... <blech!>

Oh, no, no, no, I don't do raw onions either. Cooked, fine, I just have to
deal with the intestinal issues. Actually, I like a lot of foods, but don't
eat them due to colitis that I've had since about age 13/14. Colitis is
certainly not getting better with age!

Well, I don't do wheat bread, that's for sure. White is much easier to
digest. The doctor, way back in, um, what, 1989 or so?, told me the things
I'm NOT supposed to digest. Here's the list:

herbs
spices
garlic/onions
raw veggies
whole grains
anything acidic (including vinegar - but GOD I love it!)
chocolate
dairy
coffee
grease
alcohol (like that's gonna happen? I think NOT!)

Things he suggested?

Fish
chicken
cooked veggies

He said I could control the colitis with diet or I'd have to go on drugs
forever. Well, I'm trying to control it with diet. Since I've had this
problem for the past 25 years, I may say I don't *like* a lot of things, but
what it amounts to, is I can't *eat* a lot of things. It's funny, because I
CAN'T eat most things, I'm just fascinated with food. I love to read
recipes and such. On the plus side, because I can't eat most things, at
least I'm not gaining weight! My husband wonders how I live at all.....
I'll go days sometimes without eating sometimes. :~) On the downside,
colitis makes working difficult, makes eating at parties difficult and I
stress about it. Oh well, whatcha gonna do, right?

Tsk!

I've lived with IBS now since I was 12 years old.

That's 31 years. :-)

Sometimes I just eat stuff I'm not supposed to (like pizza) and just
drink 1/2 bottle of Magnesium citrate to "clear it out" in a hurry.

Works for me......

Especially when I do chinese pigout. <lol>

Give it a try. It settles the stomach and prevents those horrible, gawd
awful 10 on the Richter scale colon cramps!

Just be near a commode 1/2 to 2 hours after you drink it. <G>

Cheers!

My sister in law and one of her daughters both suffer from colitis. SiL was
visiting once and going through a bout of it. I suggested that she try some
kefar that I happened to have. It is a fermented milk product. The fermentation
process eats all the lactose and there is a bacteria that helps to restore the
intestinal flora. She gave it a try and was impressed with the results. It is
not cheap to buy, but you can get the crystals and make it yourself at home.

I have to admit that it has a strange smell to it, but it tastes like yoghurt
that has been watered down with soda water.

Kefir is good, yogurt is good,

balanced pro-biotic supplements are better. ;-)

Uh-uh, I can't do yogurt. No dairy of any kind, really. Yogurt sets me off
right away. Seriously, I love food, but I can't eat most of it. Maybe
that's a *good* thing???

oh man, kefir is great! (if you like yogurt-y things at least). I drank
tons of it the last time I was on antibiotics.

Olives
coconut
raisins
beans and peas
ketchup (except in recipes for tomato flavouring. I usually
use bbq sauce instead when I have it)

You hit the things I couldn't live without with the exception of
eggplant. I think that is more so that I haven't found a way to cook
eggplant well. I do love the look of eggplant just I can't cook it well.

I recently posted a recipe for Melanzane al Forno on my food blog,
with photos, if you are interested. It is one of the three recipes for
eggplant that my eggplant hating husband likes.

Mushrooms
Raisins
Milk

It's funny about the milk - I think I detest it so much because I was
made to drink it as a very young child. (My mother used the "sit at
the table until your plate is empty" method of feeding us.) But I
absolutely *love* anything made with milk: ice cream, cheese, yogurt,
smoothies, etc.

The thought of drinking plain milk makes me want to gag.

Not at all, ever! I will go out of my way to avoid chocolate. I don't
even like the looks of it! The smell is enough to bring on waves of
nausea. It is horrid, wicked stuff not even fit to be called a food
item in my books!
