They used to be my favorite beans. They were similar to Campbell's P&B
except they had a second can of "fixins" that were like tomato paste with bacon and onion. Have tried replicating that by caramelizing onion and frying ketchup with some bacon grease. Close, but not quite the same. Any ideas? -- She wondered, "what is he chewing on?" And suddenly, she realized... www.cafepress.com/dwacon |

Close, but not quite the same. > > Any ideas? Try this kopy-kat type recipe... Big-John's Beans 'n Fixin's Ingredients: 1 16 oz. can Campbell's Pork & Beans The “Fixin's”: 1/2 cup Manwich brand sloppy-joe sauce (Heinz works well too) 1 1/2 Tbsp. Hormel real bacon bits 1/2 Tbsp. sugar 1 1/2 tsp. molasses 1 tsp. dried, minced onion 1/8 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. ground mustard 1/16 tsp. pepper Combine the ingredients for the Fixin's in a small jar, cover, and refrigerate at least 1/2 hour (this allows the flavors to blend). At “bean” time, empty the can of beans into a small saucepan, and stir in the pre-made Fixin's. Over low-medium heat, bring the Beans and Fixin's to a simmer, stirring occasionally. When heated through, serve. -- Wayne Boatwright *¿* _____________________________________________ A chicken in every pot is a *LOT* of chicken! |

They still make Big John's beans I believe. For some reason you rarely
see them in many supermarkets these days, but I've found them in places like Big Lots and Dollar General Store, and dollar stores also. I still think they are the best baked beans, although I like Bush's beans also since Big John's are harder to find. |
