First... we have to get moved. That was supposed to be today. We didn't
realize just how much stuff we still had. I couldn't help Jim except for
packing and I did a lot of that. But here it is 9 pm and Jim just told me
an hour ago that he can't do any more. So we've had the truck all day and
it won't be back tomorrow by 7 as planned so we will add another $250 onto
our bill. Gee I wish we could have afforded movers!

It'll all soon be over and we can get on with our lives.

$500 is still cheaper than movers, and only slightly more stressful.

Good luck tomorrow. It does take less time to unload, since it's all
in one place<g>

Thanks maxine. I tripped and fell yesterday and now I feel like a truck ran
over me. I can hardly walk because
I landed on my knee's and they were bad before that. But, we'll make it and
as Jim said last night, we'll look
back and laugh at it.

Beware your time now more than ever before. I've known people to be
busier after their retirement from their 9-to-5 jobs because their time
is so free of routines.

Yep, my husband and I both retired when he was 44. I am now 70; it seems
like only yesterday. We haven't worked a day since, and have been busy from
morn to night. You'll love the rest of your life!
Best of luck,

That would have been nice, but this is my second marriage and I was 42 then.
It's like starting from scratch. But, I've managed
to arrange our finances so we will be financially secure. We won't owe
anyone anything!

So, what have you done for 26 years?

Things:
Without reciting all the 'things' that I've done, I'll just say that I've
pursued just about everything that I thought about doing all the years I was
working. I've done a lot of things 'on my list of things to do in life' and
I'll never say that I didn't get a chance to do them. Funny, but the major
things I wanted to do did not change over these years, even though my/our
outer circumstances did change off and on. Basically, we've had the time to
do just what we wanted to do most every day; there's nothing better.

OOPPPPS, you are Canadian. (Reference to CPP, Canada Pension Plan.

"Jim get's his first Oct 1. We won't apply for CPP till he turns 65."

DO THE MATH HERE!!!!. You qualify at age 60. You will be a lot better off
starting the pension as early as possible. Note that all pension funds will
be clawed back by the tax system if you make over 53K/year.

We could take it early, but then you have to pay back forever. He only has
1 1/2 years till he's 65 and we won't loose any money if we wait.

He will have a good pension from work enough to carry us with mine until he
gets CPP. We won't be making that much and will in fact
qualify for OES.

There is a slight problem with the math and the logic.

Lets say the difference is 51 months (age 66 years & 3 months vs age 62) and the
difference is $1,000.00 per month. Conventional wisdom is that one will lose
$51,000 if they wait. Correct so far? The break even point is 51 months past
their full retirement age or in this example 70 and 6 months old.

The problem is that no one saves the extra $1,000 per month and once the full
retirement is reached the income only changes with the cost of living.
Additionally the older one becomes the less one has the ability to augment their
income.

For me the best seems to be to work as long as possible and to hold off claiming
as long as possible until full retirement.

That's the most common and most horrendous error made by those
contemplating retirement... finances are importnat but they're the
least important element of retirement. The one thing many never
consider is that not all retirement years are of equal value.
Considering one spends a total of twenty years in retirement (and then
you die) then the first year of retirement is worth twenty times more
than the last year, and all the earlier years likwise compared to the
later years. The *quality* of life lived is far more valuable than the
number of dollars spent. The longer one waits to retire the least
likely they will enjoy good health, then what use is that little bit of
extra money. What good are more retirement dollars if they're mostly
used to pay more medical bills. And it's a proven fact, the earlier
one retires the more years they tend to live and the more healthy those
years. The bottom line is one can never get those forgone years back.
I retired early and have never had any misgiving over the few bucks
more I would have had to spend had I waited more years... I much more
enjoy spending a few less dollars on enjoying myself more than gambling
on forgoing the good years to have more dollars to spend on healthcare
later and in fewer years.

Dimitri, if you didn't accumulate that first million by now you never
will, and in fact the more years you put off retiring the less dollars
you'll be likely to retire with. Quit while you're ahead, you can't
beat old father time, no one ever has... you should have retired
yesterday.

You can always make adjustments to your lifestyle to compensate for the change in
income. Before I retired I was losing 8% right off the top for pension contribution.
I was paying union dues. I was paying for gas and wear and tear on the car to go to
work, paying for coffee and lunches in restaurants, and I was paying a higher rate
of income tax on the extra income. My monthly pension cheque is about $40 less than
a double (2 week paycheque). What I am not getting any more is that extra paycheque
every few months when there were three pay days in a month instead of two.

The big advantage to an early retirement, if you can swing it without taking a big
penalty, is that you get to enjoy it. I saw too many guys work until they were 65
and then drop dead within a year or two. I saw too many people get seriously ill and
have to to the long term sick leave or a disability pension, neither of which give
you much to live on.

It is important to keep active and take care of yourself. I had had a YMCA
membership for years but it was a 30+ minute drive and I didn't get there as often
as I should. When they opened up a new facility a few miles from me my wife and I
signed up to that one. We go 5-4 days per week, weight routines 3 days a week and a
1,000 meter swim every day. I have lost 20 pounds since I joined up and am feeling
great. I started taking equestrian jumping lessons a few years ago. The Y routines
and weight loss have been a big help. I have less weight for the horse to carry and
more strength and flexibility to keep myself stable.

I also try to keep my mind active. I read at least one newspaper each day and a book
or two every week. I do online crosswords and other games and puzzles to keep myself
alert.

I plan on applying for CPP at 60. You get a little less if you start
collecting early, but the way it was explained to me at a retirement
seminar is that are ahead collecting it early if you live past 77. I will
play the odds and collect early. My wife started collecting it this year
and it's a nice supplement.

I took SS early, too. I think I've already beat the odds. But then, again,
it isn't much here for me; I hardly know I have it; but of course, I would
notice it if I didn't have it.

My wife just started collecting hers last month. It's about $500 per month. It
wouldn't be much if that was all she was getting, but that is on top of her
pension, so it's a nice bonus. I feel sorry for people who don't have a decent
pension plan through or some substantial investments for their old age. They
are going to have a rude surprise when they retire and have only those meagre
government pensions to get by on.

Some people make out okay on those government pensions. I had an aunt who had
Alzheimer's and had suffered a few strokes. My father had PoA for her after my
uncle died, and I took over the PoA when my father died. My father had applied
for a widow's pension on my aunt's behalf. She was already receiving a
survivor's benefit because my father had served in the army during WW II. But
she had been married briefly to a fighter pilot. He went overseas shortly after
they were married and was a killed within a few weeks. So she ended up getting
two pensions form the armed forces, plus Old Age and CPP. She was living in a
good chronic care facility and cleared close to $1200 a month more than the cost
of her care. She was making more money on pensions than I was working.

I dont know what country you're in MOM ,but im in Australia. Ive been
retired about 10 years now and we've travelled Aus 5 complete trips. Theres
nothing greater to wake up somewhere in the country and realise the only
place youve GOT to be today is where ever you choose.
Youre going to have a great time, good health, dont let anyone rush you... PJ

It beats the heck out of working. I have been so busy I don't know how
I ever had time to work.

I stopped waking up to an alarm clock. I get up, have leisurely breakfast,
check email, do online crosswords, go the the gym for a swim every day, walk
the dogs, have been to a few matinees at the theatre. Now I am getting
around to some house repairs.

All things we are looking forward to. It's funny really, all his working
years Jim has never slept in. He's up by 6.

Since he retired he has slept to or past 8.

Mine too! I have to start heaving him out of bed at 8.30, he used to be
really cross when I couldn't even open my eyes before 8 am.
