Default New food store opened this morning

Cub (big chain in town/state) opened a new store at 6:00 a.m. today. I
was there to scope it out and to see if they carry my jams. They have
only the Cherry Jam. Pity.

They've expanded their deli department offerings, though, to include
stuff like meatloaf, crab cakes, green beans almondine, wrap sandwiches,
and a couple other things - a chicken pot pie is there.

Their other deli stuff includes a "Caprese Salad." Get this: It's a
pasta salad -- the pasta is like a short fat rigatoni. Grooved.
Cooked, it was about 3/4" diameter. I told the deli manager that I
thought the wrong tag was on the product -- caprese is made with
mozzarrella and fresh basil; she said it had mozzarrella in it. She
said the tag was correct and I backpedaled a bit. Bonnie Madre must be
scratching all over at the very thought of pasta in it! I asked for a
taste. Tasted pretty good. Dried tomatoes and "regular" mozzarrella,
not fresh. Where are Guido and Louie when you need them?

They also have some 7-grain salad thing. I've never had such an oily
taste in my mouth. The oil had pooled at the bottom of the service tray
in the case. It was tasty enough, but way too greasy.

It's a nice enough store but nothing special. It's maybe .3 mile closer
to me than the one it replaced.

It is a "Caprese pasta salad", or "Insalata di pasta alla
caprese" (maybe with some variations), because "Caprese salad" is
just fresh tomato, mozzarella and basil, dressed with EVOO,
vinegar, salt and oregano. No pasta at all.

They'll carry more, if they know what's good for them... 50 whomps with
a pickle hat. hehe

Um, pass on the meat loaf... preground mystery meat is bad enough.

Those two shadrools are out moonlighting with Carmine, mixing
c-ment.... Yo, Louie, not too juicy!

Hmm, too greasy... no-a comment-a.

Did you check out the meat department... now's a good time to suck up
to the new butcher... a good opener is to ask him for some butcher
twine.. never know where a little string will lead... maybe some free
meaty borscht bones.

I LOVE your cherry jammies. I'm all out ... I'm having to make do with
commercial jam. Not even cherry. Won't you take pity on me, Barb?

Tammy, the Cherry stuff that the Gedney folks make using my recipe is at
least as good as my homemade stuff. I'm getting my supply of cherries
from Door County this weekend, I hope, I hope. I'll be making cherry
"stuff" when I get back from New York and Vermont in a week and a half.
