Any word on who's responsible yet? The news here in the states is
spotty and I can't get to the BBC UK site.

No - way things are, and this looking like it was targeted to coincide with
the G8 summit, frankly, could be almost *anyone*...

Yeah, it's heavily loaded down - try this direct link - just worked for me:

strange as it may seem I've been getting updates through the
singletrackworld forum, there are a few people who are in the midst of
it, as well as a few ******s spouting all kinds of crap.

4 or 5 bombs went off in tube stations/on tubes, then as people were
forced to abandon the tube and the buses were packed - 3 buses blown
up. Rough estimates of around 50 dead and 1000 casualties. No traffic
in and out of London, most people are restricted to staying in their
building (including Bomba I think). Signs on major roads into London
saying 'keep away, area closed, turn on radio'. Mobile network down
either due to heavy demand or switched off to stop further devices
being activated remotely. Al Quaeda (spelling?) have claimed
responsibility but not sure how truthful this is. Tony Blairs on his
way back from Gleneagles.

Thats as much as I know for now, its hearbreaking to hear people
wondering about family/friends who they know were in the areas but
can't get in touch with.

Steve.

A "jihad cell" of Al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility.

A tip for next time: go to http://news.google.com; go to the bottom,
click on the UK edition.

I guess my google page was missing a line... so I typed UK Edition
into the search box and got http://news.bbc.co.uk/

That's awful news! The mindset of bombers is one that eludes me.

*snort* funny, I thought it was America that was destroying the planet.

No it isn't - it's because they are wrong sorts, given wrong information.
One of the guys I work with happens to be a teacher in his mosque - nothing
he has ever read or taught preaches anything other than peace. He and his
are as appalled at what has been transpiring as you and I are. As I've said
before, it's rotten apples, not rotten barrels full.

Misguided Christians, or those with their own agenda, have for centuries
falsely killed in the name of their religion, too, and these two religions
are not alone in this.

Were you starting from the main Google page, or from news.google.com?

Usually, news.google.com has at the very bottom of the page a listing
of all editions. English-language for US, Canada, UK, Australia,
India, and New Zealand. French for France, Switzerland, and Canada.
Italian for Italy and Switzerland. German for Germany, Austria, and
Switzerland. Spanish for Spain and several Latin American countries.
Chinese for China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan (and I wish I was able to
compare those three, to see which one left out what news...) Japanese.
Korean.

But you won't see that choice on the Google home page.

I used your link and there was absolutely NOTHING to choose. It might
have been an aberration, but I got to BBC anyway.

Aye, London's not a happy place at the moment. Pretty much the only
sounds are sirens and helicopters.

As far as I can tell, all my family and friends are ok. I've had a fair
few concerned phone calls and e-mails, as I normally work out of an
office round the corner from Moorgate (scene of one of the blasts).
However, I'm working out of our other office today.

Anyway, **** 'em. We've been through worse, we'll come through this.

Exactly, what these terrorists really want is to have a lasting effect
on behaviour and have everybody living in fear, but thats easy enough
for me to say from the safety of Lancashire.
Hope this is over soon enough bomba, you going to be stuck in the
office overnight?

The police are letting us leave our buildings now and London Bridge
station is open, so I should be able to get home. Contingency plan of
catching one of the boats down to Greenwich, and in worst case scenario
a six mile walk.

It'll be uncomfortable and probably take an age, but in comparison to
what others are going through, I'll just count myself lucky.

Glad to hear it. I'd be wary of getting on anything resembling a tube
train, but thats how they win though isn't it. I imagine there will be
a lot more cycle commuters tomorrow..

And I may well be one of them. I'll check the trains tomorrow morning,
but if they're as bad as I think they're going to be, then I'll be
hopping on the bike.

I've been meaning to do it for a while, but I've been waiting for my
ankle to properly heal up.

Latest word from round here is that people are queueing over London
Bridge to get in to the station. It could be a long night...

Thoughts and prayers to everyone across the pond. Having your country
attacked by soulless degenerates is never an easy thing. We know it all
too well.

Well said. Terrorism gains its superiority when it victims fold into a
whimpering, fetal position and capitulate as did the Spaniards when a
similar act occurred on their soil.

As to who's responsible (as asked mitchellNOSPAM) how can that even be in
doubt.

My deepest condolences go out to the victims' families; and my strong
support goes out to the British people that they be strengthened by this
rather than weakened.

What I really hope is that any strengthening includes an improvement of
our leaders' wisdom, not just their desire to take military action. True
strength comes from wisdom, not acts of violence.

Where did you come up with that simplistic ideology? Terrorism is evil and
violent. And while wisdom is a marvelous virtue, it (wisdom) without the
military wherewithal to make its voice heard is impotent. Nothing short of
military strength/action against the violence of terrorism will combat it.

Wisdom is born of experience. Your leader(s) and mine have shown exemplary
wisdom and strength in dealing with Islamic terrorists. It's time we the
people get behind them in support rather than babbling aimlessly with
pacifist platitudes and touchy-feely statements that have no value in truth.

Terrorism is violent? You don't say.

Truth? You have the gumption to invoke the truth not five minutes
after having lied through your tooth? It seems that you're not just a
racist and a liar, but a hypocrite as well.

And how in all hells, do you target and destroy, a group consisting of
individuals, spread out amongs innocents all the heck over the globe, with a
hug ilitary machine? Oh I know - bomb the hell out os wherever you feel the
ratio of terrorists to innocents is greatest, and stuff the innocents,
because well, after all, they are just casualties of war, and doing so will
not have more people become terrorists, and plant more bombs, that will kill
more innocents, that will see huge military machines, bombing more innocents
etc. etc. ad NAUSIUM.

Violence begets violence.

If there were such things as 'terrorist seeking bullets' I'd say hells yeah,
fire them ALL off, no messing, but guess what - THERE IS NO SUCH THING.
Dumbarse.

Living in England, I would hope you could see the difference betweeen
"bomb the hell out of wherever..." and what was done in Afghanistan.
London experienced the reality of your statement. Afghanistan didn't.

>Violence begets violence.

If it were only that easy. Read Al Qaeda's charter. Basically, we
all have two options. One, convert the entire world to a Taliban-like
Islam society. Dress your women in burkhas, get rid of all the music,
etc.

Or exterminate them like the cockroaches they are.

No matter WHAT we do (including calling off the war on terror), we're
infidels that must be eliminated. They don't really need any excuse
to kill us, in their mind.

Shaun, RFC wouldn't be getting the blah blah blah nonsense if you had
posted to the three groups individually, instead of cross-posting. Just a
thought.

Hang in there,

Not at all. Antisymmetric warfare is a tricky war to fight.

The new mantra, for the new century, is "You cannot fight what is not
there." [just look at Linux... Microsoft _can't_ drive them out of
business].

So, fight not with guns, but with hope. Fight in a way that defuses the
anger, and renders the need to lash out both impotent and hopeless.

no gov't is capable of fighting terrorism. so, let's stop hiding behind
"support the guvmint" platitudes and do it our goddamn selves.

Hey Jon - damned good to hear you're alright mate.

We sure will, but in these times, the world doesn't need it's fear buttons
pressing any more - scared peoples, do stupid things, and even more
*innocent* lives get wiped out...

Kath has some family in the city, but they are away from the centre, some
out of the country too.

Cheers Jon - stay safe mate.

Wow. Stay safe everyone. Truly a sad day. As much as I hope it won't
happen, I imagine this will continue to spiral into more ugliness and
suffering.

Glad you guys are OK. I wonder how my other London friends are fairing...

Indeed, but it doesn't stop us from hoping otherwise, and living our lives
in a peace promoting way, does it?

I hope they're all OK and coping with the shock well, Matt.

Take care!
