Default Parmesan vs Parmigiana

There was a thread here recently about chicken (or maybe it was veal)
*parmesan*. I always thought the correct term was *parmigiana*. Am I
wrong? Are the terms synonymous or are they two separate dishes? If
separate, does anybody know the derivation of the two words?

Parmesan is the English version of the Italian parmigiano/a.
The derivation is "from" or "in the style of" Parma, an
Italian comunity in the region of Emilia-Romagna.

"Parmesan" is just an English (and some other languages) spelling of
"Parmigiano (Reggiano)". The name drives from "Parma" and "Reggio
Emilia", in the general region of which the cheese is produced.

When I discovered freshly grated Parmesan there was no going back to the
canned crap. Due to the high cost of the real McCoy Parmigiano Reggiano I
tried a local made "Parmesan" cheese. It was about half the price, but I was
not impressed with it and went back to the real stuff.

Actually, there is. Grana padano and Parmigiano Reggiano are very
similar and sometimes indistinguishable, especially artisanal Grana
padano labelled "di testa", meaning it has been made between April and
June when the cows are feeding on fresh grass.

Well, then it *is* the genuine article! I was referring more to the
"parmesan" cheese made in the US.

Especially indistinguishable when permitted to dry enough for grating
(improper storage), and most especially indistinguishable when
cooked... unless you're going to eat Parmigiano Reggiano as a table
cheese you're essentially wasting your money... sprinkling grated
Parmigiano Reggiano on a dish of pasta is tantamount to blending top
shelf Scotch with Sour Mix. Unless your cheese purveyor cuts your
wedge of Parmigiano Reggiano from the wheel directly in front of you
don't buy it... pre-cut Parmigiano Reggiano is an abomination.

Sorry. No. Parmigiano is the Italian name for the cheese. Or
Parmigiano-Reggiano

Parmigiana means a female from Parma or foods cooked in the style of Parma.
