Default Iron Chef America Question

Who is the older, white-haired, male food critic/judge on ICA? The one
who always sits on the far right? I looked at the official site and
couldn't find info. He was a judge today on the catfish secret
ingredient show - Batali vs. Trevino. He just always comes across as
such an ass.

I wish they'd have some Morimoto episodes. I love that guy.

Yeah, I think that might be him. But he looks a lot more...vulgar...on
the show.

Okay, here's a more vulgar-looking picture of him:

He writes well, but he talks not so well. I saw him in a panel
discussion about humor in writing at a professional conference in
Baltimore. Stumbled around the point a lot and wasn't very funny. Also
stutters a bit, but that's not a problem, merely an observation.

On one of the early American Iron Chef programs, he was critical of a
Japanese chef's use of bay leaves as a garnish and was rather snotty
about it. Told the chef that it was bad to use them because they're
inedible and dangerous and people could get cut and garnishes should be
edible... angry tone. Didn't seem to know that the Japanese have a long
tradition of inedible garnishes that are merely decorative.

I don't like him as a judge on that program. And, if truth be known,
don't much like the program. Feels too stagy; even more so than the
Japanese translated version, if it can be imagined.

I like the program, but it's because I kind of play along: As soon as the
secret ingredient is announced, I write down a menu of what *I* would make
if I were in the competition. Then I watch to see how close I come to what
the competitors come up with. (One predictable difference is that my dishes
never include white truffles or foie gras!)

It looks like the show is in reruns for the foreseeable future, although the
upcoming show is one of my favorites, where Ming Tsai beats Bobby Flay with
a duck (in ONE sense anyway...)

I would *pay* to see that (the other sense, that is :-)

ScottR
hell, I'd pay double, and buy the duck, if they let *me* beat Bobby Flay
with a duck.

Don't know what it is, but Iron Chef America embarasses me to watch it.
I do watch the orignal Iron Chef when I'm in the mood for a spot of
wierdness, i.e. anything remote from my normal life. I know it's been
suggested before but I'm waiting for Iron Chef Smackdown. Barring any
sharp or pointed kitchen tools, of course. Heavy food items like
catfish or casaba melons are permitted.

Agree. It feels a bit too contrived and labored. Working too hard to be
like the original with that whole "chairman" business. At least the
original character was a genuine weirdo and interesting in the same way
someone talking to himself is interesting.

<LOL> I can see it now. An octagon with two chefs in the middle with
their support teams behind them. Last one standing wins... if they have
a clean apron, they get an extra $100K

The secret ingredient is... <trumpets and misty smoke>
TRIPE... <crowd goes wild>

I watch Iron Chef (both versions) for entertainment, but I don't learn much
from them. Chef style, "A la minute" cooking is impressive to watch, but
it's irrelavent to the "slow food" kind of cooking I like to do.

That said, I would love to see Emeril Lagasse compete. I'll bet he would get
his ass kicked by ANY of the iron chefs, Japanese or American.

I may be in the minority here, but I think Emeril sucks. Everything he
cooks is just completely unappetizing to me. Plus he uses *way* too
mcuh salt and olive oil. I tired really hard to find redeeming
qualities. I finally had to stop watching.
