Default Pigs and Falling Coconuts KILL

I was curious about the assertion that "pigs kill more
people than sharks" -- that seems like a reasonable
possibility to me, but I wanted some reliable reference
for that. A Google search turned up lots of people
repeating it, but no citation of a source. One person
added that falling coconuts kill more people than pigs.

This begins to seem like a bit of folklore. Does anyone
know of an original source for this information?

Trichinosis?

I doubt that trichinosis is the cause here. I can believe (though I've
never seen any numbers) pigs kill more people than sharks, based on
exposure hazard world-wide.
City dwellers like myself often don't know how dangerous pigs can be to
humans. But, I'm told by my rural friends, you don't want to slip and
fall in a pig pen. They will see you as food and attack. Since a good
sized pig weighs a lot more than a good sized human, this is serious.
And occasionally fatal. More often to children than to adults.

Didn't 'Dorothy' in the Wizard of Oz fall into the pig pen and have to be
rescued by the farm hands?

Elderly neighbor in rural Kansas had beautiful stone-wall pig pens,
built by his dad around 1899. Neighbor had pigs his whole life, but when
not so spry, was killed by one. Chest was crushed.
I'd bet a lot of money pigs kill more people than sharks.

I have an older fact-book about pig wars and witches
and other folklore. Will look it up your factoid.

IIRC, she didn't actually fall in, but the farm hands sprang into action
to keep her out of the pen. When asked where somebody was, my
Grandfather (from rural West Virginia) always said "Went to s**t and
the hogs ate him" ! So, even if there isn't any video of "When Good
Pigs Go Bad" the meme has certainly been around for over a hundred
years here in the States.

I have heard of several farmers who were killed by pigs.

My neighbour used to have a few pigs that he kept in a pen out back. He had
a dog chained to his dog house and the dog's favourite place to nap used to
be against the pig pen. One day his ear must have been sticking through the
fence and a pig bit it off.

The reason each US Military Person gets their own seperate Grave
occured during the Civil War. I'm not sure at which Battle sit, but the
pigs rooted thru 1 communial grave too many, which set off public out
cry.
