Default Lost all my saved recipes

Hiya folks,

In my recent computer meltdown, and subsequent recovery, I lost all
the recipes I had been saving from this newsgroup. And I had been
saving them for a few years.

I am wondering if any of you regulars, and not so regulars can repost
any of your favorites that you have posted over the years? I used to
have a ton from the Zelts, from Charlie, and from a whole host of
folks that have posted recipes here.

I am also thinking that this might be of interest to a lot of newbies
here as well.

I would and will google for some recipes, but for a lot of them, I
can't remember all the names of the recipes.

Thanks in advance,

Christine

tis the season! My computer died last weekend and there is no recovery
unless I find an easy to use data recovery program after I get the new
computer.

:/ Sadly, I had a 2 day reprieve where I could have been madly saving
to removable media if I had a clue my HD was going south.
Unfortunately, I thought someone else had messed up my software and
didn't realize it was a hardware problem until it was too late.

Bummer! I hope you can recover them, or at least most of them...

No, there is no recovery of them from the computer, which is why I am
appealing to all the great cooks of rfc to repost some of the recipes
that they have posted over the years. I am hoping I can recover at
least some of the ones that looked so appealing to me. I had meant to
try a lot of them.

And this is one good reason why, when we post recipes, to use a subject
lead-in like - REC chicken . . . That way, if you google the group, you
could bring them up in a bunch.

Yeah, but then you get everyone and then some. I don;t mean to be
really picky, but there are some posters here on rfc, whose recipes
have really intrigued me over the years. I think I collected a lot of
Alan Zelt's recipes, even though I haven't gotten around to trying most
of them yet. Barb Schallers too....Barb, can you repost some of your
jam/jelly recipes? I had those in my files.. Charlotte Blackmer posted
some I really liked over the years. And I know there were countless
others that posted a recipe here and there that I had in my files.

How about the rest of you..does your heart break when you lose a
recipe that you had saved? I know mine is... Call me weird or
whatever...I really feel the loss.

I'll get right on that the next time I get up. Finally fell dead asleep at
8pm, and got up at 5am. It's been a half hour and I'm ready for more
sleep. But I'll do my best for ya, lady!

I'm grateful for having posted nearly every recipe I had in my personal
files. Now, as I think of them, I go grab them from Google.

Do you use MasterCook, Chris? I could zip up my cookbook and e-mail it to
you, if you'd like.

Squash Casserole

2 c. sliced yellow (crookneck) squash
1 c. grated Parmesan cheese
1 c. cornbread stuffing crumbs
1 c. milk
1 small minced onion
1 Tbs. butter
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper

Combine all ingredients. Place in a 1-1/2 quart casserole dish. Bake at
350F for 1 hour until set.

Note: If using prepared leftover cornbread stuffing, cut the liquid
slightly.
****************************************
Turkey Cottage Pie

2 tbs. butter
1/2 c. onion, chopped
1/2 c. celery, diced
1/2 c. carrots, sliced
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 c. white wine
1 c. turkey gravy
1/4 tsp. dried thyme
1/8 tsp. white pepper
1/2 tsp. salt or to taste
1-1/2 c. cooked turkey, chopped
1/2 c. peas (from frozen)
1-1/2 c. leftover mashed potatoes
Rosemary sprigs (optional)
Melt butter in medium saucepan. Add onion, celery, garlic and carrots.
Saute over medium heat, stirring, about 8-10 minutes. Deglaze the pan with
wine, then stir in the turkey, gravy and seasonings. Bring to a low boil.
Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, about 10 minutes.

Divide the turkey and the vegetable/gravy mixture between two 2-cup
casserole dishes. Spoon the leftover mashed potatoes on the top. Bake at
400F for 20 minutes or until the potatoes are golden brown on top. Garnish
with rosemary sprigs.
******************************************
Marinated Country Ribs

3-4 lbs. country ribs
11 oz. can mandarin orange slices
1/2 c. teriyaki or soy sauce
2 cloves garlic
1/4 c. vegetable oil
1/4 c. crystallized ginger
1 med. onion, quartered

Puree all the ingredients (except the ribs, doh!) until smooth. Pour over
the ribs and marinate in the fridge for several hours or overnight.

2 hours before serving: preheat oven to 350F (or get the grill going).
Arrange meat on a rack in a roasting pan; reserve the marinade. Bake for 1
hour, turning the ribs once. Brush generously with marinade and bake
another 1-1/2 hours until fork tender, basting and turning every 20-30
minutes. If doing these on a grill, you want indirect heat to prevent
flare-ups and burning, and a nice slow cooking.
*******************************************
Sole Piccata

1-1/2 lb. sole fillets
1/4 c. dried breadcrumbs
2 Tbs. olive oil
1 Tbs. butter
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 Tbs. white wine
juice of one small lemon
1 Tbs. capers

Sprinkle breadcrumbs on a sheet of waxed paper. Turn the fillets on waxed
paper to lightly coat with crumbs. In a large skillet melt the butter in
oil over medium-high heat until hot. Add sole and cook to a light golden
brown on each side (be careful when turning it as sole can be delicate).
Remove sole to a platter and keep warm. Add wine to pan to deglaze,
stirring to blend well. Squeeze in the juice of one lemon and stir until
blended. If the sauce needs thickened add a slurry of 1 Tbs. cornstarch
dissolved in 1/2 Tbs. cold water. Add the drained capers and heat through.
Spoon the sauce over the sole and serve immediately.
*******************************************
Roasted Butternut Squash Soup

2 butternut squash (about 4 lbs.)
2 Tbs. olive oil
4 c. chicken stock or broth
2 c. water
1-1/2 tsp. pepper
2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. dried tarragon leaves or to taste

Cut squashes in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds. Brush with olive
oil and place, cut side down, on a baking sheet. Roast the squash at 350F
for 1 hour until tender. Handle with an oven mitt; scoop the flesh from the
shell with a spoon and place in a large mixing bowl. In another mixing
bowl, blend together the stock and water. Add a little minced garlic if
desired. Puree the squash in a blender or food processor with the liquid in
batches, adding liquid as needed, until smooth (this can also be done in the
cooking pot with a stick blender). Add the salt & pepper, onion powder and
tarragon. Bring soup to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook over very
low heat about an hour, stirring occasionally. Serves 8-10.

Let me know if there's anything else you can think of!

Don't any of you buggers back up your stuff? Maybe I'm paranoid, but
I do a daily backup of "newstuff" plus a monthly backup. "Daily"
spans yesterday and today (hence everything is on two CDRs) and
monthly is similar (last month plus current month on each "monthly"
CDR).

It's dead easy to do with a simple batch file using XCOPY, and I'm
sure there are many other methods of various complexity and
convenience.

(The only problem is remembering where/when things are if I lose an
individual item. 8-)

Cheers, Phred.

Sure, but it might be a while; am leaving town.

Sure would. That's why I back-up my MasterCook file every couple weeks.
And my mail files and about 1.5 gigs of other stuff, too.

Bummer but go to a google Newsgroups search you'll be able to skim the
senders very easily.

Yeah, I was trying to google for some of mine last night, the ones I
was freaking out about. Like my family recipe for fruitcake. I did
find them on google, so all is not lost.

I was trying to google some of the posters of rfc: it is a real pain
to try to sift through all those posts to find the recipes I am
looking for.

Yes, I just need to reinstall MasterCook now. It did make life a lot
easier when I was copying recipes.

I have been trying to do that, but do you know how many posts you have
to skim through to find the recipes you want? Takes forever!

When I know the name of a recipe, it is much easier. However, I don't
know what many of them are called, just that some posters were more
prolific than most with really good recipes.

Those same posters often contributed to a lot of off topic
discussions, so many posts don't have recipes in them. To find
recipes, I still have to wade through those posts.

The problem is, I don't even remember most of the specific recipes I've
posted, and chances are you may never have collected any of them.

Very true. When I want to recapture recipes that got wiped out on my
computer, I just search "damsel mastercook" If I'm looking for a specific
recipe, I plug that in, too.

One of the reasons I post my favorite recipes is so if I lose the files
I can find them again in googlegroups.

(You thought I was just being nice and wanted to share)

You could try the poster's name and "rec". That'd at least dig out the
ones that were posted outside of another thread.

I understand however I thin you're too broad with your request.

What are the main interests?

I think most here will be happy to help but with what?

I know redundant.

How about searching for something like "1/2" and the contributor's name?
Just about every recipe has a half a teaspoon of something, or a half a
cup butter, etc. "tsp." might be a good seach string too.

"recipe" is too obvious, and really doesn't work as well as you'd think.

Damnit, Bob -- you've destroyed my illusions!

But seriously, I dunno if Christine is looking for any of my
recipes, but here's a family favorite. And I mean that literally;
when I make this, there are no leftovers:

Fettucini Con Crema

½ C. butter (not margarine)
3 cloves garlic, minced
½ t. black pepper
½ t. sweet basil
½ C. flour
2 C. parmesan cheese, grated
16 oz. whipping cream
16 oz. "half & half"
12 oz. wide fettucini noodles, cooked

Gently heat cream and "half & half" in saucepan over medium heat. In
large kettle, melt butter, add garlic and saute for one minute. Slowly
add spices and cheese, stirring, until well mixed. Add flour, also
stirring, cook for a few minutes. Slowly add cream mixture, stirring
well after each addition, until sauce is thick and bubbly. Toss with
hot fettucini.

Oh, I know I collected some of yours, Wayne. I cannot remember which
ones either though.

And do you know how much time/effort it would be for each poster to post all
the recipes they've ever posted, just so you could copy some that never
even tried, though *might* want to sometime in the future? That's an awful
lot to ask of people, many of whom work and have things to do outside of
reading Usenet. It seems like it would be less effort, and less
inconvenient for others if you did a search for "recipe "Name of Poster""
and waded through them. The word "recipe" will narrow down what shows up,
though non-recipe posts will still pop up. You could also try a more
limiting word than "recipe," like "tsp." People here don't even know if
they're included in the "prolific posters with interesting recipes" category
(you mentioned a few names, but not all), so a lot of people would be
spending their time posting things you don't even want.

Well..I have been able to recapture some of mine that I had. I have a
whole box of favorite recipes that I lug around with me, and I had the
rest on my computer. Thankfully, I could find them.

Now for all the rest...

Snagged me a keeper here! That sounds really tasty but I have to ask if
this is kind of like a cheesy alfredo sauce?

Well, I guess we could have a roll call of posters who have posted
recipes and see who Christine recalls favorably :-)

This is *not* a gloat; just some advice from a long time computer guy.
The problem with contemporary computers is not that they are unreliable;
to the contrary, it's that they are *so reliable* that you tend to
become complacent.

Backups are your friend.

Even if you don't want to back up everything on your computer (why
not?), you should still keep off-line copies of any files you care
about. "ZIP" drives are under $50, a single disk holds100 MB, and that
is a *lot* of recipes. External hard drives are not much more.

I've been collecting recipes from rec.food.cooking since 1988, and have
added hundreds of others from various places. The entire folder that
holds my over-4000 recipe collection and all the rest of my food-related
stuff is still under 60 MB.

I'd be really annoyed if I lost that collection; not only are most of
the recipes irreplacable (predating the "wayback machine", for example),
many of them have annotations that wouldn't be there if they were
replaced from original sources. Not to mention all the other personal
files that are truly impossible to replace, even if you could remember
what they all were. Many of those are considerably more important than
recipes, too.

I've always used Macs, which are *far* less likely to trash your files
than Windows, but no operating system is safe from a hard drive that
just refuses to spin or a chip that blows out. That happened to me once.

I "manage" four Macs here -- mine, Friend Wife's, and The Lad's, plus
The Dotty Daughter's, when she's home from college. Everything is on a
network, and backups happen transparently and automatically, once a
week, to 4mm DAT tapes. *Everything* on those machines gets written to
tape. Other than the disk failure I mentioned above, we have never had a
catastrophic data loss -- not once in fifteen years. But I have used the
backups to recover from human errors on several occasions, and they were
very much appreciated.

With good backups, replacing a failed disk is merely annoying (and a bit
costly) but not a Royal Pain In The A**. Not doing regular backups is
like taking long trips at night in the winter without a spare. Tires are
very reliable these days; you probably won't need it, but IF YOU DO...

For all of you that have lectured me about backups, yes I know that.
And yes, I did get complacent.

You don't have to lecture me:I have already said I was a bad girl and
didn't backup. I know now that I should have.

And I am getting a bus drive tomorrow, to back everything up.

So, please stop lecturing me, okay?

Glad to hear you're a reformed character. ;-)

Is that "bus drive" you mentioned one of those USB "sticks" that
people wear around their necks? I bought my first one a couple of
weeks ago. They're brilliant! Especially for moving stuff from PC to
PC. But I wouldn't be too happy relying on it as my sole backup
device. Don't know much about their reliability, but they look
too damn easy to lose! (Probably why folk wear them. :-)

Doesn't you system have a CD writer on it? With CDRs at about 30c per
700MB one can be quite extravagent with copies without breaking the
bank, which is why I basically have everything on two of them (which
then becomes three, then four as the months go by .

If you hadn't gotten around to trying them think of the positive - it's like

Crash keeps telling he he'll show me how to back up. I have a burner but
no software and no knowledge. I'll start pushing the issue now.

Sorry to hear of your problem, which I too have had happen in the
past. To help rebuild you collection, please check out this great
group, which is moderated:

rec.food.recipes

You can request recipes there and people are very helpful to respond,
just like in this group.

Good luck,
Mark
