Default Bratwurst

I've got a package of five fresh bratwurst I'd love to grill. The
outdoor temps have dropped enough that it's not unbearably hot outside.
However... I think we're getting a little backlash from Hurricane Sally.
Wind gusts and rain spitting on and off. Windy means not a good day
to light a charcoal grill outside.

Of course there are options. I could use my stove-top grill pan.
It's not the same taste as grilled over charcoal but you still get the
maillard reaction. Or I could brown then braise it.

I could set the bratwurst aside until tomorrow and cook something else
instead. As I said, there are always options.

You can toast them hot as possible in your toaster oven (if you have
one) and get some char on them. They seem to cook more evenly than
grilling in a pan. That's what I do with smoked sausage and what I
did last night for my smoked sausage reuben with tomato and spicy TI
dressing. Sauerkraut was home made using the vacuum bag method.

Nice. But no, I don't have a toaster oven.

They do cook better in a toaster oven than pan frying, party because they curl up, but also because you have to keep flipping them.

Julie,
Yoose could use your grill but you always find an excuse
not to. All year long... too hot, too windy, too wet...

I knew that was coming.

But it's only 1 hour away. I have to take 4 busses and at least one
Uber to get to/from Costco and that takes me 4-5 hours. That's much
less enjoyable and costly than a 2-hour car ride, but I manage.

Can I get a high-five from Bruce? <snork>

Toaster ovens are filthy little *******s to clean, tossed mine in the
trash long ago... much simpler to brown saw-seege in a frypan.

My toaster oven is quite clean, thank you very much. And it's not
hard to clean when it does get dirty which is pretty rare. Cornbread,
waffles, etc. don't make a mess.
