This has become a problem here in Ontario over the last few months as a result of a number of late night Amber Alerts. There have been three of incidents of late night alerts where millions of people had their cell phones blaring away for supposed abductions often hundreds of miles away. A number of angry, frustrated people have called 911 to complain. So not the cops and a some members of the public are saying that they should be charged for abusing the 911 system. I am not one of those who called. I have not even lodged a complaint. However, I don't blame them for complaining. There should be some easy way to contact them to complain. I should point out that the system is set up to override our phone settings. You can turn off the notifications, but the Amber Alert will still go off. So the next step is to shame people into feeling like idiots for not turning off their phones. Well, that's bullshit. Some people need their phones on. They may use them for alarm clocks. They may be on call. They may have family members on the road. They are our phones, and we should not have to turn them off to avoid alerts they don't want to here. The shamers thing that people are horrible for not caring about the life of a child. Yet, they think it is okay to disable the alerts, which we cannot do, or we can turn our phones off. It is okay to look at the alerts, pat yourself on the back for caring, and then go back to sleep without doing anything. But.... don't dare to complain. Most of these alerts have been post marital squabbles and custody issues. One alert, from more than 300 miles away, was about a women taking her child and not returning it to the grandmother who had custody. One was a grandfather with three grand children and he apparently got confused and lost. The most recent was another domestic issue where the father got friends to distract the mother and then snuck in the back and took the kid. The Amber Alert was issued at 3:05 am. The police had already arrested several people, determined the location of the father and attended that residence and talked to the father at 3 am, five minutes before the alert woke up 10 million people. In cases like this I do not have a problem with people complaining. I don't even mind if they call 911 to make an issue of it. Give us the option to opt out. |

Bet the person that called lived right nearby and was peeking out the window waiting and watching for the lemonade stand police to show up. Bet that person was horrified to see all the cops show up and buy lemonade. LOLOL! Every neighborhood seems to have at least one nosey (or nosy), annoying neighbor that can't just mind their own business. I have one nearby....way too nearby. Good story. |

When we first moved here the patio was exposed to view from the road and the neighours. I had planted a row of fir seedlings but it would be years before they would form a visual barrier. One Saturday morning I went to the lumber store and got enough lumber to put up just a couple sections of fencing. I was finished shortly afternoon and went inside to have some lunch. Just as I got to the kitchen the telephone rang. It was the old lady next door. "Hi Dave. I see you've but up a fence." Yep, and I figured it had already paid for itself. |
