Have any of you made a slurpee or slushie? The recipes I find on the
'Net require Kool-Aid. (No! Really?)
I have the means to make 'snow' from ice cubes. Would one of those
syrups you find at restaurant supply stores do the job instead of
Kool-Aid? (I really am kind of addicted to slurpees or slushies,
those drinks you can get at the convenience store -- those things that
give you frozen eye)

Use fruit or fruit juice and rum. Well, you don't need the rum but it
can be nice on a lazy day to sip in the back yard.

It is basically the same thing, except the boil it and let it reduce
so it is a bit more thicker, with a consistence of syrup. There is
also about twice as much sugar.

so go ahead and make your kool aid and then let it reduce over a
high-medium-hi heat until it reaches a thickness that you want. add
your shaved ice then add your syrup
Viola!
there ya go

Agreed. Use fruit and/or fruit juice and that snowcone-worthy ice in
the blender. Add a little sprite or 7-up and maybe some simple syrup if
it's not sweet enough. Kool-Aid? NO.

I did as a kid. We had Slushie mugs that were kept in the freezer. The
problem was, they required regular soda and we only drank diet. My parents
would buy a couple of cans of regular soda, invite the neighborhood kids
over, and we'd take turns passing the mugs around, scraping at the sides
with an iced tea spoon until we had slushies. The frozen concoctions were
divvied up into tiny paper cups for us to enjoy. I think we did this twice.
Then the mugs disappeared.

You can get Sno Cone syrup and put put it over shaved ice but it won't give
you the same texture. What you can do is to make lemonade or whatever and
shave that but... I don't know what method you are using to shave it. If
it's sticky, it could gunk up a machine. I used to freeze blocks of Crystal
Light and shave those. That worked.

But the easiest way is to get a bottle of something. I have used G Zero and
Powerade. I'm sure a sugary or HFCS sweetened drink would work as well. Just
put it in the freezer until it's not quite fully frozen. I found this out by
accident but I do it on purpose now.

Those things take me back! Pop-ice or some such thing. I have some in
the second freezer and they cool the throat on a nice hot day. Not the
same thing as a slurpee/slushee drink, though.

Why go through the bother of reducing it? Just change the recipe for the
original kool-aid to whatever sugar concentration you want.

The best slushie I ever had was a can of coke poured into an oversize mug
(about 2 can volumes) of packed fresh snow. Not sticky 0C snow, -20C powder
snow.

Before freezing they can be used as a syrup on shaved ice.
I really don't like those slushy/slurpy things they serve at 7-11,
their flavors are not much different from medicinal Kool-Aid.
My favorite frozen confections are creamsicles and fudgesicles, or
Italian ices; Lemon, Cherry, Orange, Chocolate, all good.

Shaved ice results something not like a Slurpee. The consistency is
very different Slurpees have to be held at a certain temperature
and kept moving so the little balls of ice of ice don't solidify or
melt. The sugar content is also higher than your standard HFCS 55%
fructose, IIRC. Colder drinks need to be sweeter and the higher
fructose content acts as an antifreeze.

What you need to buy is a margarita machine :-) They're electric,
so maybe John will buy you one and make you climate zoologist, too.

As for syrups, the restaurant supply stores sell flavored HFCS. As
well as most of the coffee shops and World Market. They're all just
pre-mixed Kool-Aid with better artificial flavoring (I recently
spent 6 months sampling a bunch of 15 year packages of Kool-Aid and
Flavor-Aide - they all suck except for Wild Cherry).

Look for Zergut fruit syrup concentrates - about $5-$7/liter at high
end grocers and mega-liquor stores. About one part syrup to 4 parts
water/ice/slushie (by weight).

The problem with fruit juices is they need to be concentrated so
they don't get watered down by the ice. You need concentrates. You
can get orange, apple, grapefruit, lemon/lime, and pineapple at
grocery stores but stay away from the those Bacardi mixers.

I've always made my margaritas with my Ninja. I got one of the first
models out and it has served me well for maybe 10 years and then it
died. I got a new Ninja with way more (broom, broom) horsepower and
that sucker makes snow with 2 or 3 pulses. I never considered slurpee
making at home but I am going to try to feed my habit at home. Also
good for making faux soft serve ice cream with frozen fruit, milk and
sugar. I got the Ninja Pro 1000 on special this week at Costco for
$49.

Orange County has sticky snow? Eww. I was wondering when nuclear
winter would set in from all that smog. Stayed up on mid Sunset
Strip 15 years ago for a few days. I guess that's right where the
smog accumulation line is densest that time of the year - my eyes
were burning for all 4 days. Didn't even get laid after the
wedding. Ate Russian food and drank potato vodka every day.

No there is a difference, because the sugar will change the
consistency of the water when heated, Why else do you think that they
make simple syrups? I mean if all someone had to do was add sugar to
water then the recipe would say just add some sugar water. Wow dude do

Couple of weeks ago I soaked some pineapple, cut up, in rum. Then put
it in a blender with more rum and crushed ice. We all liked it and it

That does sound delicious! I just happened to notice these actual slushie
flavorings on the shelf tonight on my way to the KitchenAid section. Or
rather, my 10 year old noticed them.

Yeah, but they're all HFCS and artificial flavoring (I guess that's
a different post of mine you heaven't read yet).

When I was a kid., I would flash freeze canned pineapple and chill the
juice. When frozen, I would put them in the blender and whiz them up with
some of the juice. I made it thick to eat with a spoon but you could add
more juice and turn it into a drink.

Perhaps just buy cheap sugar-free KoolAid packets. Sprinkle some
of that powder right into her Ninja along with ice cubes and turn
to slush?

I can't recall if it seems over the eye or further back. I really have no
intent to experiment, but I'll try to remember the next time it happens.

I might be biased due to an apparently unique head configuration. The only
headaches I get are the brain-freeze and hangovers. I sometimes get the
migraine 'auras', but never the headaches. Maybe I might get a bit of a
headache when I stop drinking coffee for a few days, but never enough to
take a pill. I have never had a headache due to cold/flu, fatigue, nor
exasperation.

Those Kool Aid packets actually don't taste like anything until you
add sugar. I ated a few of the powers recently and they don't have
much taste at all, and if they do, not of anything you'd want to
drink. Adding sugar "activates" the flavor somehow. Perhaps the
flavor is only perceived by the sugar-tasting buds on your tongue.

Simple syrup is just water fully (or slightly over) saturated with
sugar. The water is heated to make the sugar dissolve quicker and
completely (hence, fully saturated). It's faster than sitting there
add stirring 82.5F degree water for 12+ hours trying to get it fully
saturated water with granulated sugar (it can't even be done in a
room less than 83F degrees).

Water is one of the most standard compounds used for comparison and
measurement in all the sciences. It's consistency, weight, density,
viscosity and other molecular properties never change at given
conditions. It has nothing to do with boiling anything down. Water
supersaturated with sugar would be useless in drinks since it's not
stable at room temps (even less stable when it's cold). The sugar
would solidify again - ever made rock candy [pops]?

But I'll give you a D+ for trying to pull a remotely plausible
excuse out of huge ass like that. 2 people here (Carol and Dsi1)
may have been tempted to believe you for a moment.

I had it a few times as a kid. Haven't had ice cream since I was a kid as I
never liked it. The pain wasn't at the eyes but the forehead.

I would use an ice shaver and pour syrup over the finely shaved ice. I'd also drizzle with condensed milk and spoon some fruit and beans on. Holy smokes - major brain-freeze!

I was just guessing but I mentioned the sugar-free Kool Aid.
Those come with the fake sugar powder included.

Did you make the rock candy when you were a kid? Make a super
saturated sugar/water solution, pour it into a tall jar and drop in
some string and watch the crystals grow? Loved that :)

I did that with saturated salt water when I was a kid. Cool to
put those crystals under a microscope. I also did it again when
my daughter was young, just to show her.

Typical of those with a frontal lobotomy.
