Default is sweet hungarian paprika the very best?

i used to purchase szegedi paprika all the tiime. $5.99 for a small tin. now i purchase the selection brand @ $2.99 for the same amount. i can't tell one from the other. they are both good. in an older version of 'the joy of cooking', the one author stated that hungarian paprika is for flavour, and spanish paprika is for colour. i don't know where the selection brand comes from, but it's good value compared to the szegedi from hungary.

Have you tried Bulk Barn for stuff like that? That's where I go most of
my herbs and spices. Those small jars of herbs and spices that sell for
$3-5 can often be refilled for less than 50 cents.

I discovered it a few years back. Most people go for the candies, baking
supplies, cookies, pasta etc. The first time I went I was looking for
ground ginger. It was $3.99 for a jar at Zehr's. I went across the road
to the Bulk Barn and got more than enough to fill the old jar for 20
cents. Somewhere along the line I bought a bunch of the small stainless
canisters at Lee Valley. They hold about three times as much as the
commercial spice jars and it costs peanuts to fill them.

they have a good variety of spices. and speaking of paprika, they have three types of sweet: hungarian, spanish, and smoked.

you have zehrs? kitchener on. was the birthplace of zehrs. i do not go there very often. perhaps once a year. they have very nice stores, but tend to be pricey, although they have a good special now and then. i tend to frequent sobey's and food basics. they are within walking distance. i do go to the great canadian superstore once in a while; i think that they're zehrs based.
