Default prestige brand eggs here; never again

i usually purchase free run omega 3 eggs from central fresh market. pricey. but a wonderful yolk which has more yellow colour than most.
i saw some eggs on sale the other day, $2.99(CDN)for 18 eggs. so i bought them. the yolk lacks yellow. scrambling them and you can really see that they are very bland in colour. also boiled, they taste bland. fuhgetaboutthem.

Regarding Omega 3 eggs: They used to feed the chooks fish meal and I
once, ONLY once bought a dozen of these eggs. I ended up with a batch of
brioche that tasted of fish!!!!

Makes sense but I can assure you that the eggs I bought, admittedly at
the beginning of the omega 3 craze many years ago, tasted strongly of fish.
I haven't been tempted to buy them since.

Same experience here many years ago. In-laws came for a week
visit and brought some eggs from their happy free range stupid
chickens. They had been feeding them fish meal too.

Next morning, I was served two of those eggs over easy and
everyone stood by to see my opinion. They were expecting...."OH
MAN...the best eggs ever."

Not so, I took one bite and literally ran to the sink and spit it
out. That egg tasted just like fish and freaked me out. It was
way beyond nasty tasting. Well, inlaws were offended but I told
them, "sorry but I won't eat that." Even the wife glared at me
for offending her parents. oh well. hahaha

IIRC, the eggs I buy (Eggland's Best) are Omega 3 and vegetarian
fed. No fish meal.

Â* All of our eggs come from The FluffyButt Sisters . The five of them
usually give us an average of 4 eggs per day ... and the yolks are
awesome , flavor is always eggcellent .

Â* Well , maybe and maybe not . Even places like Memphis Tn allow
homeowners to raise chickens in their yard . There are restrictions of
course , like a limited number of birds and no roosters . But three or
four hens should easily supply an average family , and is within the
restrictions of most places that allow it .

LOL I live in a gated community with a golf course in my back yard. Of
course I'm not allowed to raise chickens. I'm sure there are quite a
lot of people in the surrounding area (it really is out in the country)
who raise their own chickens and might sell eggs. Unfortunately I don't
know who they are.

I honestly don't use enough eggs to worry about whether or not they came
right out of the hen's cloaca. I *do* know I've never bought eggs
*anywhere* that tasted like fish!

Â* Ours are Buff Orpingtons , a very mild-mannered and easygoing breed .
They lay brown eggs ranging between large and extra large , and they
have a very nice yolk . We had some Reds , they tend to be more
"assertive" than the Buffs . We do have a couple of roosters too , the
FluffyButt Bros Micheal and Miguel . The hens had an election and the
boys were ejected from the pen , they live Outside now . (I counted the
votes ...) They were really tearin' up the hens , because I had no
experience with roosters and didn't know how horny they are .

About two years ago an ordinance was passed here that chickens can be kept
by homeowners in their backyard. BUT, N-O roosters.

Easy to understand. At the same time, ever since we have roosters, our
chickens live much longer. The hens seem oblivious to danger. I often
see all the hens' butts in the air because they're eating, but the
rooster's upright and looking around. I think he does most of his
eating when they're back in the safety of the chicken coop.

I wonder when the chance of salmonella problems is the biggest. With
"professional" chicken factories or with unprofessional backyard
chickens.

>I like good eggs, but not so much that I want chickens.

I like having our own chickens, so I know they're treated and fed
well, but I can't tell a quality difference between "free range"
supermarket eggs and our hens' eggs.

My brother and sister-in-law have chickens; it's mainly her hobby but they're
flock is slowly dwindling. At least it was the last time my brother said
anything about them. It got out of hand; 300 chickens, which made it a 12+
hour job.

Some of the breeds were 'show' chickens and she'd get $5 per egg and sell to
other breeders. I do know this 'hobby' has generated many arguments.

Â* No dogs , cats , birds or pets of any type ? FWIW , that chicken shit
is very good for any garden , flower bed , etc . I put it along with the
ashes from the stove , coffee grounds and leaves and other vegetable
debris in my compost pile and eventually it goes on my veggie garden and
flower beds .

Nope. I've had cats, dogs, a turtle, and chameleons, and a
spider monkey for less than 1 day. (My mother was so ****ed
when my grandfather gave me a monkey!)

But not anymore. I've got enough stuff to do around the house
without cleaning up after something that can't shit in the toilet.

I just go to Home Depot and buy fertilizer. I'm not obsessive
about clearing out my flower beds, so they get some leaves
composted into them every winter.

Â* Yup , I'm familiar with that area . It ain't rural any more ... if
you turned right (headed towards Cordova on Macon) at the light to stay
on Macon and went down a couple of miles there was a pretty nice but not
running 1958 Chevy truck sitting next to a kinda ramshackle house . I
wanted that truck to use as a supply of resto parts for my 1958 3E 4X4
truck (very rare), but the old codger that owned it wasn't sellin' .

I guess you won't get another ferret then, eh?

I'd miss my cat. When Persia died I didn't think I'd want another one.
Then about a year later Buffy's owner died and she needed a home. I
still had toys and a litter box and all that stuff. So I brought her
home. She's a sweet cat.

Yep, I'm very familiar with Macon road. The area was heading past rural
when I left there. The farmer with the pretty (loud) rooster and hens
sold out. They built a middle school on his land. And a contractor
built a bunch of cookie-cutter starter homes. I haven't been there in
11 years but I'm sure I wouldn't recognize it.

Too bad about the old guy and the truck parts.

They probably ate what they raised. I never saw a sign saying they sold
eggs. They did have a sign tacked on the tree in the front yard saying
they were sales reps for some sort of products... think Amway or
something like that. Except this was for some sort of health thing.
Can't think of the name of it. At any rate, there were very pretty
chickens running around in the front yard not far from the street, and a
rooster with magnificent tail feathers... and a very loud crow!

i had them eggs before. however, or whatever, they're tasty yes. too bland looking yes. but they make for a mean breakfast. i like to make an omelette with them. using sheep guts innards(with and cheese made with mouse milk). mouse milk is succulent and nutritious. how else would mice babies survive the winter?

Â* Cats can be trained to do that ... I very seldom have to clean up
behind Max , he prefers to do his business outdoors . And when I do it's
usually my own fault for letting him eat too many bones .

Â* I much prefer to use natural fertilizers . At least I know exactly
what's going on my garden and thus into my food . The one exception is
13/13/13 , sourced in the USA , which I add in small measure to areas
that testing shows need it . Less and less each year as my soil builds
natural fertility .
