Default Decisions decisions

Â* The weather has turned cold and wet here (I lit the wood stove
yesterday for the first time this fall) , and it's time to decide which
bean dish I'll fix for tomorrow's dinner . My wife has been on
afternoon/evening shifts all week and tomorrow is the first evening
she'll be home for dinner in a few days . So I recently had her pick up
some andouille sausage for red beans and rice , but I also have a couple
of very meaty ham bones in the freezer ... and I have both kinds of
beans on hand . Both sound so good I can't decide which ! Either way I
think I'll make a batch of dinner rolls to go with .

I had Mexican food earlier so just salad and pasta for me. I did do chicken
tamales from Costco, beans and rice for the others as well as salad.

Need to find a recipe for tomorrow. Have a lot of dried beans so need to put
them to use. Will be bean with bacon soup, roasted Delicata squash, roasted
fennel and perhaps some rice and a salad to go with.

Â* I decided on the beans and ham , since her diverticulosis/itis is
kicking up right now . Spicy doesn't help .

Sounds good. It'll be a balmy 58 here today, so I think it's grilled
steak for dinner. I also have a couple of red bell peppers that I
intend to grill, peel, and marinate with garlic and EVOO. They'll go
on salads (or be eaten by themselves). If I feel really ambitious,
I'll make a batch of vegetable soup.

Today's my "down day" for the weekend. Just cooking and laundry. Yesterday
I planted about 100 cloves of garlic for next year's crop, mowed the lawn,
and puttered around a little.

Got any Navy beans? Take those meaty ham bones and use them to make
navy bean soup. My dad didn't cook very often but this was his nice
tasty soup.

Dad's Navy Bean Soup

1 lb. dried navy beans (soaked per package directions)
2 meaty ham hocks or large ham bone with meat on it
(I've been known to use salt pork and omit the salt from the recipe)
1 bay leaf
1 clove garlic, chopped
1/4 c. chopped onion
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp. salt
8 cups water

Place soaked beans in stock pot. Cover well with 8 cups water. Add bay
leaf, garlic, onion, pepper and pork. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to
low; cover and simmer about 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Remove
hocks or ham bone and cut the meat into bite-sized pieces; add back to
soup. Add more water if needed. Heat through.

The dinner rolls (or cornbread, which I didn't actually grow up with)
would be nice with this hearty soup.

Temperature dropped to 35ºF here in the Catskills last night, my
ventless propane heater wasn't quite enough so I turned on the
furnace. The ventless propane heater will heat the entire house but
without the furnace on there's too much condensation.
Time to go out and drain the garden hoses and turn off the garden well
and drain that pressure tank.

Â* I've had the beans in the slow cooker since before noon ... seasoned
very much as you describe , just no bay leaf . I used a ham bone ,
decided there wasn't enough in there so added more . We like it meaty .
Dinner rolls are rising in the pan as I type this , made 18/50g rolls
and stuck 12 in the freezer for later .
