Default Cloves in bean soup?

As I type this, I am eating one of the best bean with bacon soups I've ever
had. I had to do a double take at the recipe because it called for 1/8 of a
teaspoon of powdered cloves. The recipe has a pound of dried navy beans. I
have never added cloves to soup before, but I tried it. In fact towards the
end, I tried the soup and decided to add even a little more. I also added
extra celery, including the leaves, mainly to use up some celery. And I
added two diced carrots. Recipe called for a pound of bacon. That seemed
like too much so I added a lot less. I didn't really count but perhaps 12
strips.

Anyhoo... Ever added cloves to bean soup? Yummy!

When I was a young boy, I got it in my mind that cloves would go good in stew so I made beef stew seasoned with cloves. It tasted pretty much the way that I had it in my brainpan but my mom suggested that it was odd. It must have been pretty bad if my mom said a discouraging word about it so I never did it again. OTOH, I thought it was okay.

I generally add a whole clove to the stock for my chicken soup.

I usually add cloves to bean soups and to beef stews... but not
powdered, I use 1 or 2 whole cloves stuck in an onion. But need to be
careful not to add too much or the clove flavor will dominate.

the easter ham usually is cooked with cloves so
it's just in there anyways.

the only other thing we've cooked with cloves is
chili sauce.

I don't know about that but the last time I took supplement advice from you,
my neuropathy increased due to excess B vitamin intake.

Well lookie there! She found something she likes.

I don't use cloves often but one or two can add a punch to soups.

Exactly... I usually add one or two whole cloves to bean or beef
soups, stick them in an onion for easy retrieval just don't go
overboard. Cloves don't work in chicken soup

I never use whole cloves to stud anything. Then you have to
retrieve them. I use powdered cloves and add a tiny pinch as
called for to equal what whole cloves would do.

I once could only find whole cloves so I turned them into powder
in my coffee grinder. For awhile, no matter how much I tried to
clean the coffee grinder, my coffee always had a hint of clove
for a long time. lol
Clove flavored coffee is not so good.

Then years later, I turned my coffee grinder into powdering dry
ferret food to make the traditional warm gravy meal that they
loved. Last time I used it was to make more for Mia so it's still
got ferret food dust. It still works well but I'll just save it
for use for future ferrets meals.

The fresh ground coffee each day is so overrated and worthless to
me. I would never buy another grinder for coffee beans, only for
ferret gravy meal powder.

The cans of ground coffee taste no different from fresh grinding
beans each morning to me. Waste of time and effort, imo.

I can see that happening. I will not use a coffee grinder in a store
because they invariably have traces of flavoured coffees that have been
ground in it. If I wanted flavoured coffee I would buy it, but I hate
the stuff and the residue is enough to taint mine.

You have been following Sheldon's posts too long. You inability to
detect the difference does not mean that other people cannot. Maybe it
doesn't make much difference with the low quality coffee that you buy,
but people who spent the extra money to get good coffee and go to the
effort to make a good cup of coffee can tell the difference.

I use a burr grinder and I can taste the difference in the coffee
when I grind my beans fresh each day. I also keep my unground
beans in an airtight container.

I'm no coffee aficionada but I can taste difference in fresh ground
and pre-ground cans.

Easy to adjust the size of onion to the quantity of soup. When I buy
onions I choose a bag that contains lots of small onions. And for the
past few years I've been buying sweet onions. I like them better for
cooking and for salads. Naturaly there are many ways to add whole
cloves, can stick them into meat, or simply use a mesh teaball.

I detest cloves in such things as apple pie and that is a leftover from
school days when the cook always used them.
OTOH I add a small amount to tortière and stud an onion to flavour the
milk used in bread sauce etc.

Well, I never had apple pie with cloves. Can't quite imagine it.
