It's snowing, there's ice on top of the hummingbird feeder, but this is one of two hummers that are still coming around. I'm guessing they wished they'd gone to Florida. Jill |

They do like the colour red, though. Last summer I was sitting outside reading a book and was wearing a red shirt. A hummingbird hovered right in front of me. Silly bird, the feeder is over there ----> ![]() Jill |

You're the one who somehow got the idea that I was going to move in with you - and you posted that to RFC just out of the total blue. After having met you twice at casual austin.food gatherings 2 or 3 years ago and not giving you any indication that there was any sort of romantic interest in the least, you somehow twisted that into MY MOVING IN WITH YOU? That was just way too Psycho for me. I sat there at stared at the screen for at least 15 minutes wondering, WTF? That was just way too spooky. I've met weird, semi-psycho women before but you win, hands down. Mapi of austin.general still holds the male title, but at least he announced his psychosis right there lying on the floor of the bar at B.D. Reilly's rather than romantically obsessing over me for 2 years. Needless to say, you need to come to terms with what happened and why your mind works that way and stop making up excuses for your fixation and disappointment before we become the next Yoli and Michael. I'd prefer you use a sniper rifle on me from a few hundred yards away. There you go - a reason for you to buy yet another gun and ammo. And Jeremy, I was just tired of your decade of bullshit and visions of grandeur about all these things you're "working on" or have not done in the past. Even posting a call for meetings with imaginary people about imaginary projects of yours at "the normal time and place", as if you are somebody important with a life. I'm pretty sure you're manic depressive mixed with habitual liar. Sorry I don't fit either of your Ideal Psycho Pal Profiles. -sw -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Sufficient that most feeders are red and yellow, that will get their attention. The actual 'recipe' as such is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Boil well. |

I never add red dye to sugar water. I haven't done anything differently this year but it's rare to still see one after October. I made another batch of sugar water and refilled the feeder yesterday. It was odd having to put on a coat and boots and tramp through snow to bring in the feeder to wash and refill it. I'm thinking those birds (there are two of them) are wishing they'd gone to Florida when they had the chance. ![]() Jill |

My cat is grateful she doesn't have to go out in it. ![]() It *is* funny to have to put on boots and walk through snow to get to the feeder. My usual walking around in the yard footware is a pair of rubber flip flops. Sorry but when it snows that's really not an option. > ----------------------------------------------- > Virginia Beach > > Rest Of Today > Snow until late afternoon, then partly sunny late. Sugar water is not a hummingbird food source, it's only to supply them with energy to catch food. Hummingbirds mainly subsist on tiny insects (gnats etc.) as they flit about... they're not just sucking up nectar from flowers, they also eat the tiny insects in the flowers. During winter weather there's no food for them, which is why they migrate. |

When they arrive here it is well before small insect time and I always put my feeders out early to help get them through. Yes they prefer and probably do better on insects, but they can make it. They are tough little birds. I had regulars and one year a crackle set up a nearby nest. The two grackles chased off all other birds, but the hummers didn't even take note of them and the crackles gave up. |
