Default Boston Globe: On baking beer cheese pretzel bites and more - not so easy

"How long does it really take to prepare those minute-long recipes from Facebook?"

First paragraphs:

By Christopher Muther
Globe Staff May 30, 2016

There is something inexplicably soothing about watching the minute-long cooking videos that regularly turn up in my Facebook feed. My fingers cease scrolling when I see a time-lapse pair of anonymous hands whipping up ice cream doughnut holes, giant Twix bars, or deconstructed German chocolate cake.

Sandwiched between ugly political arguments and pictures of overly athletic acquaintances going on 100-mile bike rides, the rapid-fire instructional videos act as a palate cleanser to the surrounding social media narcissism.

I dont think I know anyone who has made the recipes, but someone must be whipping up no-bake chocolate peanut butter M&M balls because Tasty, which posts an inordinate number of cooking clips, has 57 million followers on Facebook €” thats more than the population of South Africa. Its British spinoff, Proper Tasty, has another 10 million followers.

Both specialize in comfort food. When youre sitting at your desk at 4 p.m. looking at Facebook and you see clickbait such as a pizza bread boat sail by, youre likely to stop, drool, and think to yourself, €œMy, that looks easy. I bet a chimp could make it with one hand tied behind its back!€...

There are eight comments. Plus a short video.
