It won't, you'll just transfer it to a new OS unless you replace your
hard drive and start over from scratch.

Have you checked the internet for a tool to remove it? If I get
malware (not a virus), I have always found a free tool that is
specific to what I picked up. Luckily I've been able to figure out
the name - finding a removal tool is easy after that. If all else
fails, call your internet provider for help because they want you
online and using their product.

Hubby picked up a bad virus a few years ago and didn't tell me
anything was wrong with his computer... just kept using it even though
he knew he had a problem. Finally, my ISP (Comcast) started
contacting me about it. I'd never gotten anything like that before,
so I thought it was some sort of phishing scheme and ignored it for a
couple of months. Finally asked hubby if his computer was acting
funny and called Comcast immediately when he said yes.

Up to that point, we'd used other anti virus programs - but I found
out we get Norton for free via Comcast, part of the removal process
was to download and run it. Two hours later, we were virus free
(after resorting to a Norton add-on called Eraser, which is pulled out
for the really bad ones).

Let's be brutally honest about this. Slow boot up or shut down time
is due to an aging hard drive and has nothing to do with the OS.
Replace the HD, install the same OS and you'll have a blazing fast
computer again.

When does it update? I've had 10 since early October and not once
have I been told to click anything for an update (no notices) nor has
my computer been slowed down booting up or slowing down for an update.

So for months you spread that virus far and wide. Just like "Typhoid Mary", you infected
all who came close to you. What a nasty thing to do.

In the future, if you even suspect a virus infection, get it checked out.

You'd be surprised at how long time gets stretched out to when there's someone in front of you wanting information or needs to get some work done. If it picks that moment to update, you know I'm going to be sweating bullets. Windows schmendows!

I've got my computers set up to prompt me before updating. Changing that might solve my problem but that don't set right with me. My current plan is to do a fresh install and do the updates automatically. That should work fine.

We both run Malwarebytes and CCleaner. You can get both free but we do have
the paid versions. I had Norton a few years ago and it really mess up our
systems. Oh and we do run CCleaner every night before we close down.

We do have our ups and down but no viri.

Yes Norton is a big pain now, excellent the first couple of years when
they came out then all down hill. I like CCleaner also but use the
free version.

Everyone should operate on the assumption that everyone else's computer
is infected. That way you don't have to depend on others to keep up
their shit.

Roy has extremely poor reading comprehension. It wasn't my computer,
it had an up to date free version of a well known anti-virus and I am
not being paid to monitor his online presence. So F you Roy.

That's exactly why I stayed away from Norton for so many years. I
bought it once and it totally messed up my computer... on top of being
known as a resource hog. I returned it that day and luckily the store
gave me my money back. Learned my lesson and didn't use Norton even
when it was free through my ISP. Hubby had already used several free
anti-virus to no avail and paid for the full version of Malwarebytes
which was at the top of the pack at the time, so I didn't care what
Norton did to his computer. If it was messed up, he could buy a new
one, I didn't care. Norton Eraser did the trick and he continued to
use the computer until it bit the dust.

Apparently Norton has changed its ways because now it's fine with both
my fabulous desktop with lots of RAM & huge hard drive and my el
cheapo netbook.

Correct. What's surprising is that more people don't understand that
even Android needs to be rebooted from time to time. I have zero
background in computer technology, so if I know it - everyone should.

How does spending all that time doing a fresh install equate saving
time with updates. I absolutely hate reinstalling an OS.... and then
installing all those updates just to get started drive me bananas.
Periodic updating is no big deal, especially when it happens during
shutdown.

McAfee is offered by my ISP but has the same reputation.
I used to use Norton but it clogged the computer. When I bought a new
desktop, I was advised to use ESET and found it to be fantastic. It was
top of the reviewer's lists then but is now down in the middle of the pack.
I am now on my 4th desktop and several techies have advised me that the
MS security software + their firewall is more than sufficient but I use
the free Malwarebytes and free Ccleaner as well.

It is. I close down my computer every night but I am very bad at
remembering to do so with my mobile phone. I tend to do it only when it
starts to go wonky.

It already exists. Computers know when you're in a hurry, and that's
when they decide to slow to a crawl. Well-known fact in the industry.

It's usually best to turn off the "update" features of programs. You
can always get it updated when you have to time to wait.

My problem here is the "clean up folders" thing. When I get ready to
leave for work I just want to shut down the computer quickly. Never
fails, it picks that time delete old messages that have accumulated.
Takes 15 minutes or so, so I usually choose cancel and do it later.

Ooops, I missed this. Sorry, sf. I print some puzzles that
I shrink to 91%, draft quality, and I have those preferences
saved under a name so that when I print, all I have to do is
choose that over default print.

I don't see 2 of those options when I print in the Chrome
browser. I'm kind of particular about this particular thing,
yes, I know it sounds kind of kooky, but there you have it.

For phones,etc...best to just turn it off while recharging.
Its a good habit. For computers, best to do a cold start at least
every few days.

It's annoying as hell, isn't it? I'll upgrade when I'm good and ready.
I have no problems with Windows 7.

Agreed! Also, run current anti-virus software and don't open links from
people you don't know. As sf found out, the free Norton AV software
provided by Comcast works just fine. I nearly bought Kaspersky (sp) a
year or so ago but decided not to. Turned out there was no need.
Norton alerts me when something is questionable.

Thanks, I will try that in Chrome. I never got that to work in
IE, I have the zoom at different sizes depending, but the print
doesn't reflect that. I think it's because it's not a page print,
but printing through a button on the website.

It defaults to 300 dpi, which seems like it would be draft quality.
It's no big deal in the scheme of things, just would rather not
waste a lot of ink on this. The specific size, that matters most
to me. In the meantime, I'll hold onto Windows 7, if just for that.

Appreciate the suggestions.

First it was a little icon, then a bigger notice, now it's almost
a full screen nag. I'm waiting for them to take away the ability
to close that notice and only leave the option to click on
Install Now.

You can get rid of it!

Ok

Go into start menu
All programmes
Windows update
At the bottom of the page click on 'installed updates'
find update KB3035583 and remove it

if you have automatic installation of updates alter that to let you choose
which updates to install and don't install this one again.

It worked for me. HTH.

The nags are supposed to get worse.

Makes sense if you are Microsoft to have everyone on the same OS, but W7
is a good system. No reason to change if you don't have to.

None of our computers at work get the notices though, not sure why so I
won't complain.

Yes, but look at all the back support M$ must provide. You know damn
well they don't wanna do that.

Wait until the successsor to W10 comes out. I bet you cannot even
purchase it. It will become lease-ware like Photoshop or Autocad.
IOW, you pay, but you do not own. M$ has been trying to initiate that
approach fer yrs. Right now they are jes pestering you to death to
see how you react. The ol' frog ina slowly warming skillet gag.....

That worked for me, although it took me some time to find it, then the
first update that came along, pop, there is was again. I see I have
an update option tonight when I switch off, it listed all sorts of
updates for Explorer Edge and Win10.
