I shut down the computer at the office at the end of the day. I don't leave it on at night. I suppose I could do that. I used to do that. These days I don't feel inclined to do that. The Windows 10 will do updates while booting up and down. I suppose leaving it on all the time would solve that problem. |

The interesting thing about Win10 is that it's reportedly able to work with older, slower, machines with 1GB or RAM. It used to be that Windows would drive the sales of newer, faster, hardware but it seems MS is taking an opposite strategy. That's a good thing but I look forward to the day when I don't ever have to use that OS ever! |

It's a strategy that has worked for MS before. Edge is a pretty good browser - fast and clean. I have a hard time telling it apart from Chrome. He's posted > before that he still uses a phone line for Internet. You have it right, Cheryl. My laptop gets any wifi but I don't have my own wifi. I've used it on free wifi at McDonalds and my library. Just sit in the parking lot and use it. But you don't dare enter any personal info on a public wifi. I need to make this laptop my main computer now. Without my own wifi connection, cheapest solution is just to buy a phone modem so I can hardwire right into the phone line. I've already chosen between a soft and hard one but I have a geek friend checking today and I'll trust his recommendation. I suspect, I'd be better off skipping the soft modem and just spend another $25 for the real full deal. > I almost asked how > much do modems go for these days, but decided I could just check google > if I really wanted to know. lol I'm going with a US Robotics modem. They are good reliable ones...like the Sony's of tvs. The soft modem is about $24 The better one with it's own hardware cost $49 I'm thinking better to buy the better one. |

It was easy to do. Of course I backed up all of my data the day before. It didn't change anything of my data. The thing that befuddled me was that I couldn't find the shutdown button. It turns out (at least on my computer and monitor) that the display needed to be corrected (everything was falling off the left side of my monitor screen) After adjusting my display, I chose to put my Windows icon running down the right side of my screen. Everything you need is within the Windows icon. I can now read full screen as before. Quickbooks and Turbo Tax prior to 2015 will not work with Windows 10. I've had a week to become accustomed to Win 10 and now I will install Quickbooks 2016. I hope the data transfer there goes smoothly, I don't want to have to re-construct anything this close to year end. I seem to recall that there is a deadline on the free upgrade -- maybe the end of the year? Oh, and I think the new MS Office is now Cloud only. They also want you to choose a single password that affords you the ability to log on across many venues. (I declined) Janet US |

I got an Acer Chromebook a few months ago and I just love it (I keep my Toshiba laptop at work); this is the best $150.00 I ever spent (price is a bit higher now): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...p age_o00_s00 Only "beef" is that it will only work with compatible "Chrome" printers...otherwise, no worries! It boots up fast, and the battery life is amazing - typically about ten hours. Very light at 2.5 lbs., too... I am SO sick of these cumbersome Windows updates, they can be a real time - stealer, and of course they occur when time is the "critical" element... -- Best Greg |

You can turn off a windows computer each day and avoid problems too. My computer had been on for a LONG time lately. The past few days, I kept getting kicked off the internet everytime I tried to download something. I was cursing AT&T connection. Then I thought to turn the computer off completely and do a cold start. No more internet connection problems. It was my computer not the isp. Every time you start a program, it takes up some system resources. Once you close the program, most will return the resources but not all programs. Some will take more and more resouces each time you open again. Eventually, your computer acts screwy. Often a cold start is the solution.. It's at least the first thing to try. |

If I have to do anything more complicated to set it up other than saying yes, it's already a no-go for me. -- sf |
