Jim Gaffigan (a comedian) talking about how everyone denies eating at
McDonald's.

The last time I was at McDonald's was in 2008. Mom and I had just
visited my dad at the hospital. On the way home Mom decided she wanted
a milk shake. There was a McDonald's on the corner. She said, "Go
through the drive thru." Okey doke. She ordered a small chocolate
shake. (She couldn't believe the price! It had probably been about 20
years since she'd gotten a milk shake from McD's). So yes, I admit to
having been to a McDonald's in 2008.

This is a funny routine about people who deny going to McD's and know
exactly how bad that stuff is for us:

I admit going to one last summer. Well, it wasn't my choice, my
friend's kids wanted Maccas and we were pressed for time. The store
still smelled the same inside as I remembered it (blechh), I had some
sort of wrap, which pretty much tasted like it looked... enough said.
Before that, I'm not sure when I last set foot in one, but we're
talking about 20-25 years.

I am one of those who will not go to McDonalds. One day last summer I
was supposed to meet someone to go hiking and I stopped at a nearby
McDonalds for a coffee because a number of people told me it was good.
It was okay, nothing special.

I had not eaten a meal from McDs' since the early 1980s because I didn't
like it and it went through me like grain through a goose. One night at
the end of a very hot dusty afternoon shift I stopped at a McDs on my
way home to get a milkshake. I did the drive thru. There was one car
ahead of me. I waited patiently at first and became increasingly
impatient because it was taking so long. They finally filled that order
and I rolled up to the window and was told they could not get me a
milkshake because the machine was broken. I had been sitting there
waiting all that time for nothing. When I told a co-worker about my
experience he told me they say that on night shifts so they won't have
to clean the machine.

A few years later I gave them another try. It had been another long hot
afternoon shift and I thought a milkshake would be cool and refreshing.
I placed my order, waited to pick up my order, finally got to the
window and was told the machine was broken. Based on the location of
our office at the time, that was more than 20 years ago.

They did you a favor. McD milkshakes are nothing like a real one made
with milk and ice cream.

True. But like I said, both times were at the end of a late shift on
very hot days. It was about 1:30 am and there were not a lot of options.

Ah Denny's, the former home of racism.

Surprised they even served "black" coffee.

McDonald's has decent coffee these days. Their "skakes" are crappy. They
are not milkshakes, and don't fit the legal definition of milkshake. In
addition to their coffee, McD's has 2 other good items, their parfaits and
their smoothies.

Jack in the Box, which has rather crappy food, makes *real* milkshakes. So
does Hardee's/Carl's Jr. and their burgers aren't even half bad. Steak'n
Shake also has real milkshakes, and very good burgers. BK has bad "shakes"
like McD's but decent burgers.

A couple days ago, I took my son and his friend on an outing. We went hiking
off trail in the hills, then got BK on the way to a skatepark about a half
hour away (I skateboarded a bit too), then we got BK after that on the way
home. He told me that it was one of the best days he'd had in a very long
time because it included hiking, skateboarding, and eating at BK twice.

I don't usually eat donuts, but I do stop at McD's along the Interstate to
get coffee. In August I'm taking my son and friends to Chicagoland for a
skatepark tour, and I anticipate stopping a few times on the 5 hour drive
to buy coffees that will be predictably adequate.

On 3 days, I will be eating crappy breakfasts. We're staying at a La Quinta
where we've stayed 3 times before that is super clean, but their free
breakfast...well, it's free, and 3 nights with me and three 13-14 YO boys
are only costing $161.xx, including the crappy breakfast, which they will
probably like. The coffee there is pretty bad, like the food, but it is what
it is.

DD has some marginally acceptable breakfast sammiches.

I'm not saying they're great, but their coffee is good.

You pick and choose.

I will give them this, a LOT better than the atrocious coffee flavored
water they used to serve too hot!! I always said McCraps should have
been sued for making atrocious coffee, even when fresh! :-(

I eat at McDonald's every 5 or 10 years. My last was about a year
ago. My mother was in the hospital, and I didn't get a chance to
have lunch until I was on my way home. I was ravenous, and Mickey D's
was quick and convenient.

It kicked off a streak of having a pickle slice (or three) on my homemade
burgers. I always wish I could find a small jar of really thinly sliced
hamburger dills, but I've only been able to find them by the gallon, which
is way too much pickle for me.

Buy a small jar of whole pickles and slice them yourself.

I'll consider that in 5 or 10 years when the desire for pickles
on burgers overtakes me again.

I will happily admit that I go to McDonald's occasionally. But not for
their food.

We did a cross-country road trip last summer, and we stopped at a
McDonald's at least a couple of times a day so we could (a) use the
bathrom, (b) buy a drink (usually water), and (c) take advantage of
the free wi-fi.
