Default Inexpensive pine nuts

Does anyone have a source? I was watching Extra Virgin in the wee hours
yesterday and they made a tomato sauce with a ton of pine nuts in it. Also
had a little Parmesan but I would leave that out. Then Debi Mazar had an
accident with the blender. She spilled it everywhere so her husband had to
whip up another batch. I don't have the actual recipe but it looked like
they added about a cup of the pine nuts to the sauce. They also tossed some
in the salad. I love pine nuts but when I find them for sale they are
always expensive so I ration them.

We get them at BJ's for a reasonable price. Probably Costco too. It
has been a while so I don't recall the price, but I do know it was
less than half of what some small store would charge.

The cheaper ones are from China.

I saw some in an Italian store yesterday but since they were a bulk
product, the origin wasn't given. I understand that the Chinese ones can
impart a metallic taste that can affect one for days. Has anyone
experienced it with those from the Mediterranean region?

I never had that problem with the Chinese ones, but I have heard others
did. I don't know anyone who had a problem with the ones from Italy.

This discussion reminded me that there was some problem causing
a shortage of pine nuts in Italy. I didn't know stink bugs were
the issue.

I don't think they are inexpensive anywhere. Trader Joe's has a 10
bag for something like $7. I bought it, but haven't opened it up. It
says Product of Korea, Russia and Vietnam - Roasted in the USA. I've
read so many bad things about the after taste that takes days to go
away common for Chinese pine nuts - this package even has a warning on
the label about a lingering bitter or metallic after taste - so I'm
kind of scared of the product. Wish these were New Mexican pignolias
because they won't do that - but NM are way too expensive for my
blood.

Safeway used to carry 'em, fer $12 lb, shelled. That's damn cheap. I
jes saw some for sale at our local Kroger mkt. They were not only
expensive, but they weren't even shelled. Ferget that! Try phoning
around to yer local health food stores for availability and prices.

China. You'll want the Chinese pine nuts, even though any savings will
be negated by the taste of them. If pine nuts are cheap, they're no
good.

A similar thing happened to me last xmas. I was at the fresh fish
counter and was about to complain about all the frozen fish being
labelled "Product of China" when I realised..........

I think Costco does have them but all of their nuts have a disclaimer that
they are on shared equipment so I can't have them. I guess I didn't
think about them.

Hmmm... Interesting! I should check Winco to see if they have them in
bulk.

No health food stores around here any more. But no need really as the
mainstream stores now sell all of those same items. But I will look at
Safeway next time I go there.

Yes. But not inexpensive. I got spoiled with my health food store. I wish

Thanks! I just ordered a pound of the X Large. I hope they are easy to peel

After giving this some thought I think pine nuts would be wasted in
the typical Italian style tomato sauce.

Seaching tomato pasta sauce and pine nuts most recipes are similar to
these, minimally cooked, not the the typical lengthy cooking of
Italian pasta sauce:

You ppl that do a blanket condemnation of Chinese products don't know
spit about quality. Some the best electronics come out of Taiwan,
which is --last time I checked-- populated by mostly Chinese ppl!

The "made in China" taint is no worse than the 50s "made in Japan"
nonsense. Thirty yrs later, Americans are going apey over Japanese
"quality", which is total bull. I hadda closet fulla dead Japanese
audio and photo gear that jes barely made it through their warranty
periods.

I've bought plenty of Chinese stuff and it's no better or worse than
most of the stuff made in USA. In fact, the US made floor jack I
looked at was almost $200. The Chinese floor jack I actually bought
was the same size, cost only $40, and was a tad bit better made than
the US made jack.

Besides, who is actually creating the products? It's the same bean
counting MBAs who make US products that are so poor in quality, that
ppl look for non US-made alternatives. Yes! My ex-GF refused to buy
--or let me buy for her-- any clothing made in the US, specially by
union workers. She claimed the quality was demonstrably poor. Better
if made in Indonesia or India or Chin...... I'll not go into the
entire US car industry. You all know that story.

I returned a top-of-the-line down Winter parka cuz it was crap w/ a $300+
price tag. The $19 ranch coat I bought at Walmart, 10 yrs ago, is
warmer and still in daily use.

Once again, notbob reiterates that old saying, "you gotta be smarter
than the product". Junk is junk, regardless of who made it.

Try to tell anyone from Taiwan that they are in China, White Man.

You're talking about Trader Joe's? I don't have food allergy
problems, so shared equipment is at the bottom of my list of reasons
why I wouldn't buy something.

I love cheap floor jacks - they're great! I'd love to get one of those light-weight alloy ones but they're kinda expensive. OTOH, most likely, those are made in China too.

And we are not!?

One of the reasons we offshore jobs is cuz big companies can get away
with horrific toxic pollution. Also, last I heard, the GMO farmers
are already upping the amt of Roundup and other death juices required to
kill the now highly resistant bugs/weeds. The run-off of toxic
chemicals from agribiz and CAFO's is killing our waterways. Huge dead
zones exist in Hudson Bay, Gulf of Mexico, etc.

Love Canal, Hinkley, etc. You think our own country is not poisoning
the crap outta us!? There are over 1300 superfund sites around the
US. Most will never be cleaned up. They will jes add to the general
pollution that threatens to kill us all.

So what happens to the US economy when *all* the manufacturing jobs have
been exported? Enough already have been and your promotion of Chinese
products doesn't help! You mentioned Japan but their economy was nowhere
near as big or dominant as is China's.

Are you suggesting that American-made floor jacks do not fail? As it goes, you should use floor jacks only to lift cars up on to jack stands or some other redundant support. It ain't real safe to rely on a single jack to hold your big old American car off of your body. The hydralic pressure in the jack is retained by a tiny little needle valve - like a giant boulder being held by a finger. My suggestion is that you learn proper floor jack safty. You must have been asleep when they taught this in auto shop 101. :-)

They are. I had one. It was still better than the US made (so
claimed) one that cost $200.

Apparently.

No one but a fool would crawl under a vehicle with only a floor jack
holding it up. Chrystonacrutch!, at least shove a couple o' concrete

I've built a lot of computers over the years. The parts are mostly made in Taiwan. Hell, I don't even know if we have the capability to build something like a motherboard in the USA. The only component likely to be built in the US are the hard drives. Perhaps I should try a non-American built drive cause those things don't last very long - I got a drawer of 'em to prove it..

I am promoting zero Chinese products. I'm merely stating the quality
of the products they do make for US companies is controlled by that US
company! China does not set the bar. "Make us a $5 widget for $1."
You actually think that $1 widget is gonna be quality?

No one's economy is as big as China's. But, at the height of their
economic prosperity, Japan had the largest, strongest, and most robust
economy in the World. At least according to Time magazine. At least
until their bubble exploded, too.

> I really question your patriotism!

Question away!!

I'll be the first to assure you, I have very little patriotism left
for this country. Despite having served, this county has shown, over
and over, it doesn't give a rat's ass about it's veterans or the
"common man". We live in a total police state (no! I didn't stutter),
our constittuional rights have been long ago stripped away, and the
govt is killing us jes as fast as they can shovel money into big
pharma's pockets.

As for that old redneck saw, "If you don't like it, leave", believe
me, I'm looking.
