Default What's Up with Pretzels?

Surely (hopefully) it's like the cupcake craze.

Pretzel buns. Pretzel rolls. Even some ridiculous looking ad for a
chain serving pretzel dough pizza. (Topped with some sort of cheddar
cheese sauce that looks like it comes out of a can for 50¢ ball-park
nachos.)

When I turn on the TV, it appears the US has suddenly gone crazy for
preztel dough everything. WTF?

I like pretzels as an occasional snack. I've eaten hot doughy pretzels,
too. Delicious! I tried to make soft pretzels from scratch once. I
failed. I didn't realize at the time they are like bagels; they need to
be boiled before they're baked. (I was about 17 at the time.) I didn't
have a recipe, I just tried to cobble one together based on bread dough.
I wound up with crispy baked pretzels. :-D

Back to the point. Who wants all this pretzel dough stuff? More stupid
marketing. And people will surely buy into it.

I like the trend and crave pretzel bagels. Pretzel pizza sounds
weird, but I'd try it once.

When I lived in PA "pretzel bread" sandwiches were very popular. I
thought they were pretty good, and a nice change of pace. A little
sweet, and chewy but not tough.

You're not going to find many of those around anymore, including
Manhattan - the place everyone thinks of first when they hear NYC. I
happen to like soft pretzels and that's what the current pretzeling of
everything trend is emulating.

Many years ago we had a work conference and some of the sandwiches for
lunch were on pretzel buns. You couldn't tell by looking at them, but
the texture and flavor were clearly soft pretzel, and delicious. I've
been searching for those buns ever since but haven't found them. I don't
even know the deli they were ordered from. The Wendy's pretzel bun
burgers are nothing like the bun I had that day.

And don't forget some GLUTEN-FREE pretzels.
I did finally locate a box of gluten at my health food store. Last one on the shelf. GWTW maybe? She was kind of happy to hear that the big markets aren't stocking it.

They'll probably start having pretzel challenges. I could live without
those big soft pretzels. Just not a favorite food at all. I do like
Synder's stick pretzels and Newman's own High Protein but could probably
live without those too.

I have made pretzels from scratch. First time was as a kid. But I couldn't
find the right salt then so had to save up the crumbs from the Mr. Salty
boxes.

If you go to PA you'll find all manner of pretzels. All kinds of fillings,
all kinds of toppings. Many of the sweet. Just not my thing.

I was just looking at recipes last night. The trend for at home now is to
dip in just plain boiling water and that's what I did when I made them.
Apparently lye is only for German pretzels.

===

The Ener-G gluten free that are not soy based are actually really good. We
liked the poppyseed. Had an oddly peanut butter flavor to them. The
Synders are good too.

Where do you think pretels originated? Are you eating Japanese pretzels?

I know where they originated but we have Americanized pretzels here. Where
do you think the little crisp ones came from? Sweden?

Eat these word, sw!

http://users.datarealm.com/marbeth/soft_pretzels.html

Particularly:

The ratio is 1:64 lye to water, and I have never had any ill effects. If you
prefer, however, boil the pretzels in plain water for 10-20 seconds; this
will give them an "outer coat" similar to a bagel. I give two more "bath"
solutions at the end of the recipe, if you care to try them. I have not.

Home style involves baking soda in the water.

He's jealous. That's what's up now. If he didn't think of it first,
of course it's wrong.

I learned to make them with lye water. And my mother's family is PD.

For the record, I never once even considered sleeping with you. And
you know that. You're the one who somehow got the idea that I was
going to move in with you - and you posted that to RFC just out of the
total blue.

After having met you twice at casual austin.food gatherings 2 or 3
years ago and not giving you any indication that there was any sort of
romantic interest in the least, you somehow twisted that into MY
MOVING IN WITH YOU?

That was just way too Psycho for me. I sat there at stared at the
screen for at least 15 minutes wondering, WTF? That was just way too
spooky. I've met weird, semi-psycho women before but you win, hands
down. Mapi of austin.general still holds the male title, but at least
he announced his psychosis right there lying on the floor of the bar
at B.D. Reilly's rather than romantically obsessing over me for 2
years.

Needless to say, you need to come to terms with what happened and why
your mind works that way and stop making up excuses for your fixation
and disappointment before we become the next Yoli and Michael. I'd
prefer you use a sniper rifle on me from a few hundred yards away.
There you go - a reason for you to buy yet another gun and ammo.

And Jeremy, I was just tired of your decade of bullshit and visions of
grandeur about all these things you're "working on" or have not done
in the past. Even posting a call for meetings with imaginary people
about imaginary projects of yours at "the normal time and place", as
if you are somebody important with a life. I'm pretty sure you're
manic depressive mixed with habitual liar.

Sorry I don't fit either of your Ideal Psycho Pal Profiles.

I didn't use that recipe. I was hunting for one to use up the whole wheat
bread flour that I bought. And apparently that was a mistake. All of the
recipes I see call for bread flour *and* whole wheat flour. At least it is
a very small package.

I missed that part. She's in my k/f so I didn't see her comments about
pretzel whatever.

Pretzel rolls might be the best thing ever, I honestly don't know. I do
know I cringe when I see the ad for pretzel pizza dough topped with some
obviously canned cheddar cheese sauce. I don't remember the name of the
pizza chain; isn't that the point of advertising? It sure didn't make
me want to seek out this place and try it. Same thing with pretzel hot
dog buns at what, Sonic? Another thing I won't be trying soon.

It's Little Cesar's that has the repellant yellow sauce that is spread

Ah yes, that's it! Here's the TV spot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-JUXu6xYkY

This is what prompted my little rant. Looks pretty disgusting, doesn't
it? But hey, it's a pretzel dough crust! The latest fad in all things
pretzel. LOL

How about Sonic? Hot dogs on pretzel buns with bacon and that crappy
yellow cheese sauce again:

Nope, sorry. These ads don't make me want to rush out and buy anything.

I have seen that ad. Pretzels used to be one of my favorite snacks, but
that Sonic ad sounds nauseating--and some of the ads for items like pretzel
buns for hamburger actually sound like they would be difficult to eat. I
suspect that this is one of those fads (if it even reaches the level of a
"fad") will be short-lived.

I certainly hope it's short lived, Mary. Pretzels are one of my
occasional snacks. I like Snyder's of Hanover sourdough pretzels.

It hasn't migrated out here that I know of. I don't order Little
Caesars, don't look at the throw away ads and I guess I don't watch
the right kind of television to see it - but I know they advertise,
because I've heard "pizza, pizza" - so maybe radio? In any case, I
was blissfully unaware of pretzel pizza until it was mentioned here.
Now I'm wondering how they do the pretzel outer crust part.

Doesn't appeal to me either. It bears no resemblance to pizza IMO.

Ads are just a way of getting their name out there. For the past
couple of years, Mountain Mike (pizza) has been advertising on sports
shows. The name meant nothing to me and I wondered why they were
spending so much money on something I never see. Then a few weeks
ago, we were in a small community about an hour away and what did I
see? Mountain Mikes. We were headed over to meet people for lunch
elsewhere, but if I was just driving along and feeling hungry - who
knows? I might have gone in and ordered a pizza out of pure
curiosity.

Yes. It's called 'advertising' and the concept is fairly well known by
most people these days. But thanks for explaining it to us.
