Default French Toast for Dinner

I didn't really feel like cooking. I had to have my lovely cat Persia
PTS today. I knew I needed to eat. So I whisked a couple of large eggs
with a drizzle of milk (as for scrambled), added S&P and a dash of
Penzey's Fine Herbs. I dredged two slices of wheat bread in the egg
mixture and cooked them (with the extra egg poured over) in melted
butter in a hot medium skillet.

Nothing fancy, just tasty and filling.

I make a savory (not sweet) French toast. My wife is
lactose-intolerant, so I dilute the egg with water, a half egg shell of
water and two eggs. I use sourdough whole wheat, cracked wheat, or
multigrain bread -- one large slice for each of us. I let the bread
soak in the egg as long as possible so that the egg penetrates to the
center of each thick slice. While the bread is soaking, I sauté some
finely minced onion in olive oil. As the onion begins to color, I place
the soaked bread on top, fry, turn, and fry some more. After turning, I
add some slices of cheese to mine and cover the frying pan long enough
for the cheese to melt.

What I described was certainly not sweet.

I ate one of the pieces of toast. It tasted fine. I really don't feel
like eating.

Thank you, Sheldon. It was difficult to do but the vet said even with
medication she wouldn't have lasted more than 2-3 more weeks. I
couldn't put her through that. So I let her go.

Good move... as her organs shut down she'd suffer.

Absolutely. She showed me the x-rays. Not only were her kidneys
shrunken but she'd developed kidney stones. It's a shame they can't
tell us when they feel bad. Still, for a few days she barely picked at
her food. I pretty much knew that trip to the vet would be the last one.

It hurts when you discover that they are feeling bad and of course we
humans have no idea, we tend to notice their eating patterns, weight
loss and changes in sleeping behavior.

Two vets told me that animals hide the fact that they are ill, because
it leaves them vulnerable to being attacked.

Sigh. I sure wish I had known that Ming was most likely in pain.
Looking back, I can speculate a bit. Can you look back and see little
things that might have been clues that Persia was very sick?

Did you make previous posts about Persia, or was this very sudden?

Oh, Jill, I am so terribly sorry for your loss. Please accept a virtual
hug.

I make a monthly donation to our local Humane Society and I'll earmark
September's in memory of Persia

Sorry about the cat.

I'm having a turkey sandwich and dangit I should have checked the date on
the bread before I bought it. I guess the other 5 rolls will have to go
into the freezer, much as I hate to do that. Also need to go to the store
as my lettuce was bad and I have precious little in the way of produce now.

Am trying not to buy much and mainly just living off the stockpile while the
other two are gone but... I'll have to go get a few things. *sigh* Was at
a store earlier today too but didn't know that I needed the lettuce. A
sandwich with no lettuce just doesn't seem right.

This is what shopping lists are for. Be sure to pick up some crappy
lettuce so you can bitch about it, okay?

Use by the 2nd and it was rather brown and mushy.

I wouldn't normally do this at all but I'm going to be the only one here for
10 days and I'm making it my mission not to buy much food.

I'm not living single now. I just haven't been buying food. And when I was
single, I bought tons of produce. That was the thing I bought the most of.
I ate a big salad for dinner pretty much every day.

The lettuce wasn't crappy. Just old. I could have sworn that I bought it
quite recently but apparently not.

Yep. Think about Julie when you hear about internet bullying. She is a
prime example of the alleged victims in internet bullying because he is
such an attention whore. Even dumping abuse on her feeds that need for
attention.

Your "waiting for the undertaker" post was ridiculous. It seems you are
more heartbroken over your cat's death than your mothers. I guess the
cat can't leave you a house and cash.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Persia has been with you a long
time. The house will be lonely without her.

Thank you, Janet. In time, perhaps I'll adopt another. Right now it's
just painful. I can't bring myself to put her toys away.

It'll get easier, then one day you'll want to go find
another lucky furball, in the meantime just take care of
yourself. I know it took a lot to let her go.

Yes, it will take some time. They have a big multi-tierd cage in the
lobby of the vet's office where they usually have a couple of cats up
for adoption. One was a tiny little calico kitten, I'm guessing less
than 5 months old. The other was an orange tabby, probably a couple of
years old. A man brought in his rather exhuberant dog who wanted to
greet them. The tabby went mrrrrowwww, hisssssss! I'd guess that cat
doesn't like dogs. BTW, the dog only had one front leg. You sure
couldn't tell by the way she pranced around she was "disabled". But
when her owner told her to sit, she did. Well-trained.

But no, I wasn't going to be walking away with another cat yesterday.
It's much too soon for me to think about it.

I think another cat will find you, when you're ready.

I'm glad you are thinking of adoption, even though it is too soon. We never
can replace a beloved pet, but we can love another one. Years ago, my first
cat died at the age of 20 (almost 21). It was so painful when I lost him
that I was going to try to go without ever having another cat. I talked
about him incessantly and truly went through a mourning period. After about
3 months, I finally decided that I really need another cat. By coincidence,
that was exactly when Amber (RB) needed a home--the people she was with had
had her declawed on *all four paws* but were going to put her outside if
they could not find another home for her. They were expecting a baby and
said they "did not have room" for Amber in their home (as if a cat needs a
great deal of space!). Well, I fell in love with Amber immediately, and I
found that I still thought of Raucher but now I was filled with good
memories of him instead of thinking of the pain of losing him. From that
day on, I always knew that I would adopt again when one of my cats died
(although, like you, I did not have a timetable for it). However, I am very
glad that you already know that you will get another furball when the time
is right. They bring so much joy into our lives, and you gave such joy to
Persia.

Just remember, another kitty will NOT replace Persia, but it will
replace the hole in your heart.

I know that. I would be hard pressed to find a cat who was so
absolutely adoring yet delightfully amusing as Persia.

When she was still new to me I brought home a couple of acorn squashes
and set the bag down on the kitchen floor while unloading groceries.
Naturally she had to stick her head in to see if it was something for
her. It wasn't, but she didn't know what those things were. So she
decided to give them a swat. Hey, they moved! So she batted at them.
They moved again! Next thing I knew she was sitting there battling the
acorn squash. Goofy little girl.

Thank you. It will take a while.

The sweet little girl gave us a scare on the 700 mile drive from west
Tennessee to South Carolina. I thought we'd lost her in a hotel. She
managed to squeeze herself behind the nightstand and the wall, a tiny
furry grey ball. We couldn't see her! John and I thought for sure a
maid had left the door open when we went out to dinner. We had everyone
in the place looking for her. Nope, she was there the entire time.
Sneaky little wench.

She got her payback when we were just outside Savannah, Georgia. I
called my mom to say we'd be there in about an hour. She asked us to
pick up a rotisserie chicken for dinner. There is a Sam's Club (similar
to Costco, I guess) near the airport. John has a membership so he went
in and got the chicken. Persia had to endure the last hour of the trip
(she had refused to eat the entire trip) with the smell of freshly
rotisseried chicken wafting at her in the back seat next to her carrier.
Heheh.

Thank you, Dave. She was with me 13 years... I'm not sure how old she
was... 16, 17, could have been 18. She was a stray who demanded I let
her in.
