I was seeing stores decorated for Christmas in October. FGS, it's not
even Halloween yet! It doesn't offend me but I find it irritating. I
don't want to listen Jingle Bells for three months, either.

I think I'll let them know I'm not happy about the lack of pearl barley.

I've found a decent canned corned beef out of New Zealand. Everything
on the north American continent is now a processed, slurried product.
The NZ product is from Palm, 11.5 ounces, contains meat that is
identifiable, juices and some little bit of fat. I think it tastes
good too.

I've been having great success at my Winco. I just stop off at the
service desk as I leave and ask if I may leave a message for the
person who does the ordering. They take down the message and 3 days
later the item is on the shelf.

Dad likes to use barley in a soup, but he also enjoys oats, or oatmeal,
if he doesn't have the barley.

You're lucky they have it in their warehouse. That didn't work for me
with tarragon vinegar. It they don't have it in the warehouse, it
won't go on the shelf.

Fun stuff. :) Tracing the hand a turkey was basic "how to teach a child
how to draw a turkey 101". LOL

I don't know if it would be allowed now, but my kindergarten teacher had
us make handprints in plaster of paris. Seems to me she poured the
mixture in tinfoil pie pans. After they'd set we each got our handprint
to paint/decorate and take home.

I've never been to any stupidmarket that didn't sell pearl barley,
usually two or three brands... I always find it with the dried
beans... and with the Goya foods display. And there are lots of on
line sources.

What difference would it make where my dad was stationed? With the
exception of two years in Bangkok I've always lived in the US. I worked
in retail when I was 18, we didn't decorate the store until after
Thanksgiving.

So, am I the only one who is wondering why one would add potatoes and barley to the same stew? OK, I see he's "experimenting," but barley and lentils and potatoes sounds awful heavy to me. Any one of those 3, sure, but all of them?

Excellent question. I didn't think past the "when to add potatoes"
question. I wouldn't add all of those things. Lentil soup, potato
soup, barley if you're making certain types of soup like Scotch broth or
beef & barley. Certainly not all together.

I think they pushed it back somewhat here this year because I'm
usually sick of the Christmas season by the time December rolls
around. It was especially bad the year Christmas decorations went up
before Labor Day.

Nope. Aside from two years in Bangkok, we lived in California twice. I
don't remember the first time, I was born in Oceanside. Dad was in
Vietnam the second time we lived there. We lived in Virginia twice, New
Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio (very briefly), South Carolina (now twice
for me). I think that's it. After Dad retired we moved to Tennessee.
At least I got to go to high school in one place. :)

I have to say, the Thais and Chinese in Bangkok *loved* Christmas! They
decorated their shops with some of the coolest looking stuff. Vivid
mylar garlands that expanded like a string of "paper dolls". Lanterns
made of clear red plastic with gold foil trim. Very pretty stuff! Most
of the people probably weren't Christians but they definitely loved the
decorations! :)

I misspoke. The store decorations went up right before Thanksgiving
(after Remembrance/Veterans Day) in time for "Black Friday".

Funny thing, the folks who decorated their shops weren't out to sell us
anything other than a bowl of noodle soup or fried rice. They just
loved the decorations. :)
